NCKA Friends, the next kayak fishing supplement is just weeks away in Western Outdoor News. In every one, I like to include a Kayak Workshop section covering rigging. This time, rather than work with a kayak shop, the spotlight will shine on NCKA's ingenuity.

Tips should be fairly simple to explain and illustrate in a photo or two. I have a year's subscription for one of you; the award will be totally subjective, even arbitrary. Of course you'll get full credit for your cleverness. Please submit via email to [email protected] by Monday June 16.

Thanks!

No one? You folks have some shown off some very clever rigging over the years. Here's your chance to share it with  WON's 70,000 readers and maybe win a subscription.

Good stuff hand-built by NCKA: battery boxes, various creative transducer mounts, anchor rigs, downrigger set-ups, crab nets (yeah, out of season), leash systems, bait tubes and so on.

(After 8 years of kayak fishing across the West I know a fair bit of rigging. The point of the newspaper isn't to talk about myself - it is to share the stories of the wider community. I hope you'll take this opportunity to highlight NCKA know-how and maybe give other kayakers a fresh idea)

Nothing Fancy here,  butt...

Rod leases...   I like to take Old Car Cell Phone charger cords,  put a brass clamp on one end and circle around the other side and crimp on a clamp, or whatever those things are :smt002

the curled loop does a fine job of holding on to most handles of many rods.

I have found these to be very easy to put on and off and have saved 3 set ups so far.

Subscription is running out,,, no begging here at all.....  :smt003

I'm looking for at least two more rigging tips between now and Tues. I can print as many as five or six. A sub to the weekly newspaper and a year of Western Outdoors magazine is up for grabs. Give it a shot!

Instead of trying to find that Perfect, Sturdy, Flat and Stable surface for mounting your F.F. on?...just make your own! Find an area to glue a piece of plastic cutting-board to and you'll be happy that you have four less holes you'll have to deal with and you can get it out of the way, so that your not having it in your FACE or so far away you can't even see it.

I used a piece of cardboard as a template and LEXEL All-purpose glue(i think any Marine Grade adhesive will work) Scored and roughed up the area on the Kayak before adhering.
I also angled the cut-board slightly inward and down for DRAINING/NON-POOLING of water around the unit.
Now all you have to drill in your yak is ONE hole for the Transducer Connector to come through.
I put mine DIRECTLY UNDERNEATH the *shelf* keeping WATER off/away from the connector hole.(seal the hole after feeding connector through it)inside and out.

pic1~ w/FF on mount-finished product.

pic2~ glued in cut-board.

pic3~ view of sealed plug coming from under neath the cut-board

pic4~ inside the hull view....sealed connector wire

pic5~ different angle.

NOTE~ If you find a low enough spot, once the F.F.unit is removed from its mount, you might be able to turn your Kayak over/FLIP-IT on a flat surface without the mount getting chewed-up or knocked-off.....if your kayak has high front and rear points.

Mendohead, gotta love the bait tube. High speed, low drag. I've got a couple myself. If anyone has a photo with a fish going into or out of a tube, please send it along. I will use it if it comes in by Thurs am, crediting Mendohead and the photo contributor.

Thanks to everyone who participated! My editor has the final call, but you should expect to see your submissions in the July 4 Kayak Summer Preview insert in Western Outdoor News.

The subscription goes to Mickfish for his drift boat style anchor set-up. Congratulations.

Paul
