Delta Bass Report: 6/2--6/9

Hit the delta in various spots over the last week.  Tried a lot of cheese mats (pic 1) for a few fish and many blow-ups.  Two biggest fish on the moss frogs were just over 3 pounds (pic 2).  Most caught in open pockets rather than through the moss.  The senko bite is still there, fishing outside the weed lines or in deeper pockets between the tules. 

XSquid and I hooked up for two windy days in two different locations with little action, about six or seven fish in the 1-3 pound class between the two of us.  Both days were fun trips despite the lack of fish.

Morning topwater bite with poppers has been the hot ticket.  This morning I caught 9 bass on topwater, biggest was 4 pounds 9 ounces (pic 3).  Had a total of 12 fish for the day.  Most productive day in the last week.  Hopefully the topwater bite will continue to improve with the hot weather this summer.

Last hit was at 9:20.  After that, I tried the froggie on the cheese for NADA, except a few good blowups through the mats.  It would be cool to hook-up with you again.  I'll be doing topwater next Sat.-Tues. evenings, so maybe that would be a better fit for your schedule.  Kids welcome.

You should start tagging those things, Bryan!  You've probably caught some of the same ones multiple times - except that you were catching bigger ones earlier in the Spring.  Way to go!   

The warmer the delta gets, the better the frog bite gets. I fish the cheese on Mildred Island from about 10am till it gets too hot or my arms hurt too much. Late June, July and August are prime times to frog fish the slop.

Hey Bryan, it was good to see you again.

We fished until 3:30 PM mostly using tournment frogs for 4 blow-ups but no hook-ups. Switched to worm for a while for nada. We did see a nest with 2 bass (probably 2lbers) and a huge carp while resting on a floating dock. I tried to entice them with everything I had but they were spooked everytime I dropped my lures around them.

Troutnut: you are so right...can't wait for the hotter stuff to move in.  I also think that is why most of my frog fish have been in the holes or between the mat and cover like rip-rap, trees, or tules.  A few fish have been busting through the mat to hit the frog.  A few were pretty good sized.

Abking: I've always wanted to tag fish.  Not sure how or if it is legal/ethical.  Would be interesting.

Sweet Toad Hook-ups!  You said you were gonna and you are....Thanks for the Pics&Port!  that cheese looks nasty and thick....how do you do it?!

Throw the frog (my fav is a Snag Proof/Bobby's Perfect Frog in Black) as far back on the mat as you can.  Drag the froggie over the mat, and sooner or later a fish will blowup on the frog.  If you are lucky, it will get your frog too.  You need a heavy 7 foot rod, mod. fast tip, a powerful baitcaster reel, and 65 to 80 pound braided line.  That's the setup the shop sold me.  Seems to work okay.  The fun part is: theLUREneverHITStheWATER!  Its like fishing on the livingroom carpet.

I did that the other day.. it was a mess! I was fishing a rock jetty and pitching a trix jetty worm on the rocks and walking it down. I was trying to cast my Cardiff (first time casting w/ it) and I got about 1000 backlashes..  ....oh it was not pretty. But the rockfish and lings I got a hold of didn't seem to care either way. I'm sure the LMB's wouldn't care either.

Thanks for the lure tip HB. I have a few lakes w/ serious lilly pads and the frog looks like the ticket.

sounds crazy!...80lb. Braid and a BruteStick?!  I might have to try it in an area not so thick with veg.  Then after I get MrsPiggy, I'll be hook'd myself, THEN! I'll go and get the RealDealFrogGear!
