Hello Everyone,
First time poster…long time lurker. Main reason this is my first time posting a report is that most of my fishing occurs on a pontoon boat. Wasn’t sure if this site allows reports from pontooners. For those who don’t know what a pontoon boat is…I attached a picture below in Stillwater. However, this fishing excursion was from a kayak.
This past Friday I talked a friend of mine, Blake from MBKF Co, into launching from a place in the Big Sur coast in the Garrapata area that I scouted out last year. The conditions were great…swell was almost non-existent.  This was only my third time on a kayak so I was still a bit nervous. The access to the beach was short and extremely easy to get to the launch. We arrived at the beach at 6 am and noticed the wind starting to pick up a bit but we lunched anyway. We fished for 4 hours along the Big Sur/Garrapata coast. I used a 2 oz jighead w/ white body tipped with squid. The rockfish bit was fantastic the entire time out there…mainly browns, grassies, copper and some of the biggest blues I have ever seen. A few times I could see schools of thirty to forty blues following my lures. I released all the rockfish with hopes of landing my first legal ling of the year. The wind started to pick to where I started to feel uncomfortable out that far out (even though it looks calm in the picture) . On my last drop on the day I hooked on to another nice blue when all of the sudden it started to peel line…hitch hiker ling?!?! Yes… 29in cling-on…First keeper of the year.
Matt (aka Steelhead)

PS how does everyone feel about me posting reports even though I fish from a pontoon boat?
I regularly fish the Coast Guard Jetty in Monterey, Stillwater Cove (PB), and Coral St (PG).

Hey Steelhead -

Nice report and ling and WTTM. It is far better to be a pontoon boater than a lurker. :smt044 There are several folks in the group that don't use kayaks. I don't think anyone minds, just can't participate in the competitive events, however you can attend just to hang out and party. Man if you can get in and out of the surf in a pontoon boat, more power to you.  :smt003 But thinking about this a little more, a pontoon boat might be easier in the surf in some ways compared to a yak, but if you wipe out... See you out there.  :smt006

The advantage of a Pontoon Boat is you have two Hulls to stick your NCKA Decals to!

Matt,

It's not how many hulls you have or how big your fish are, its about your attitude and I'd fish with you anytime.  You post pictures, you share tackle info, fishing spots, weather info and you're a good storyteller.  After I finished reading your post I gave you a virtual high five for landing your ling.  Thanks for posting!
