Hey guys, I was reading the reports on the L-K trip and it sound like every one had fun even for the rough landings. I grew up on the Monterey Bay, and spent most my time on the South Coast fishing, hunting etc. I have always enjoyed seeing people pursue the outdoors, But, there was a post that bothered me. The post I'm referring too was talking about how a friendly person opened  a gate and let them through as long as they locked it, Then (the person who posted) proceeds to offer the combo too who ever wants it. I find this very disrespectful. The kind person who let these people in did not intend on having most of northern California running around with the combo. I do not understand why some one would take advantage of a person this way. Locals in this area are aware that being allowed in certain areas in a privilege not a right and have respect for the person who allowed them in (ie Don't give out privileged information). Doing this is going to upset many people and ruin other peoples chances of being able to use these areas. I know its a public area but lets not shoot our self's in the foot its getting harder and harder to find spots to launch with all the recent closures and would hate to loose another due to something like this.

In the article written by bill  about fishing the Big Sur coast quot the first star in the L-K section* Opens at 8 am. Costs $6-$8 to launch. Showers, restrooms, and campsites available. Be very courteous to the rangers, as they aren't always the friendliest towards kayak fishermen. Previous groups have been pretty disrespectful. Make sure to follow all of the rules,

What bothers me about this post is why do some select people have privilege to a public area which we all pay for??
Group IQ is inversely proportional to the size of the group.

i understand that but the person who let them through the gate early was giving them inside info. if they didn't care when you went through the gate they would have not put a lock on it.

OK, here is the deal. The gate combo is given to those who are camping there and if you call in and tell them you will be using the day use area before 8 AM they will tell you the combo. I always call the week before to let them know I will be there early, where I am heading and confirm the combo. I didn't think it would be appropriate to post the combo so I PM'ed it to those who I knew were going. I  always catch an extra fish for the ranger who lives in the trailer who is also a yak angler and a really nice guy and have never been hassled.

Thanks for the explanation Scott that makes sense.

ditto GB2 on the info and wanted to add that the rangers I met there were professional and didnt behave like jerks.  They made sure I had a license, made sure I knew basic regs like how long a ling has to be.  They didnt break out the calipers, or make me pull fish from stringers, or any other general BS.  Heck they even helped one of us who lost a cotter pin for the wheels by bending a nail!

so if in the past the rangers were unfriendly towards kayak fishermen, guys like GB2 help rehabilitate our image, and the respect is being given back.

What bothers me about this post is why do some select people have privilege to a public area which we all pay for??

PRECISELY.  This is a very similar story to when I met Mako/Juan at High Rock Bar on the Eel River.  He had the combo, but I did not.  He didn't give it to me because he'd told the person who gave it to him that he wouldn't give it out.  I respected this completely and said so in a post.  What I didn't respect was the fact that a select few out there have the "privilege" of knowing the combo - why them?  It's PUBLIC.  It ended up I did know the combo, having heard it before, but I'd never used it before that day because I didn't know what the requirements of having it were, and I'm not one to assume it's OK to access something that's locked.  When I heard Juan say he'd been given the code by a guide that allowed me to consider that the nature of this combo is indeed one of those "Good Old Boy Club" type connections.  I do not care for that nature of arrangement at all.  If it's public it's public.

A good ethics test is to present an opportunity to someone where they'll have an unfair advantage over others for no particular reason.  Those who live life in survival-mode and are out to get what they can, however they can within the "rules" as they're written at that time are opportunists, and just because the rules are what they are and the privileges went to who they went to does not mean that it's ethical.  IMO speaking out against such inequities of access is the most ethical thing to do.

I used the combo that day for the first time, and I'll give it to anyone who asks for it until I hear an authority give me a valid reason for not doing so.

Admin: Pls move this post out of reports and let's get back to boosting.

Anyone could obtain combo in same manner as GB2, i.e., as a campground patron.  If ranger/ camp host assess you as a courteous, law-abiding campground patron who presents yourself in a manner similar to GB2, no doubt you get the combo upon request.  Likely have to disclose combo to overnight guests to avoid false imprisonment.  I don't consider the combination privileged info (BTW, I don't know the combo).

Penal Code 236 provides: ''False imprisonment is the unlawful violation of the personal liberty of another.'' Courts apply this statutory definition whether the offense is treated as a tort or a crime. ''[T]he tort of false imprisonment consists of the 'nonconsensual, intentional confinement of a person, without lawful privilege, for an appreciable length of time, however short.' ''  See Scofield, 45 Cal.App.4th at p. 1001.  You think a campground guest who asks for the combo won't get the combo or an escort out?!  Overnight guests must be permitted to leave whenever and at any time they want to leave - gate or no gate.

Outside the context of overnight campground guests, I'm confident GB2's combo usage  is with keeping the finest courtesies expected of him by the Ranger/ host, i.e., calling before each combo use, giving a fish afterward, generally conducting himself in an appreciative and respectful manner.  No problem there.

Everyone has access to LK, its not some people get in, and others don't.  So the combo thing is really a non-issue to me.

And by "extra fish" it should not construed that GB2 catches 11 rockcod (instead of 10) and gives the 11th to the ranger.  He gifts a lawfully caught and retained fish from his stringer and gives that away. :smt003

I understand tinman's concerns. And agree that we should not post the combo # online. Nor should we boost about knowing+sharing the combo.
But it is safe to share the combo # with fellow NCKAers [via PMs, email, phone, or face to face] if it is provided to us by the camp host or ranger. Just don't post it online.
Limekiln is way overrated anyways.

Good call.

If not public information it shouldn't be posted. If told something in confidence and I share that information this thing called a conscience kicks in and says you just f@#$%$ up Frank. But that's just me can't speak for others nor change. their actions

The combo is probably in place to ensure a high quality camping experience for campers.  They probably had problems with non campers driving through in the middle of the night, maybe even theft.  I'm sure its not some privilege thing, just giving folks some peace and quiet at nite.

And I'm sure giving the combo out to early fishers is not at all a problem for park management.

Mountains out of molehills on this one.
