I was at Fishermans Warehouse today looking for a compact trolling baitcaster for trout. The search was long but the decision was undisputed  :smt023 :smt023 :smt023

I ended up with an Abu Garcia 4601 Custom / Kokanee (very light) that even came with a CLICKER  :smt007 (the clicker feature was an easy sell for me)

I paired the reel with a Shimano Clarus (one piece) CSC-66ML .....L:6'6" /  Line WT: 6-15 lb / Power: Medium Light /  Action: Fast

Can't wait to use it  :smt002

Joel

I have been looking for a trout trolling baitcaster so I can be like PatR. How much did it run? I use lighter rods with moderate action for trout trolling but I won't debate the issue with the "trout slayer".

mooch, since you are a shimano guy, I'm surprised you did not get the tekota 300 line counter!

I am kind of with scott, how come you went for such a short, stiff rod? sounds like a bass rod? Of course, I guess you do catch some bigger trout than I do!  if you llike shimano, they make a talora for kokanee trolling.

are you going to use metered trolling spectra or get one of those shakespeare external line counters or just sweep out the line like you do with a spinning reel?

$100.00 for the reel, $60.00 for the rod. I prefer going with a faster tip (fast action) because I plan on using this light set up on Mendo, Del Valle and Forebay stripers too AND when trolling with the deadly shad rap, you always have that chance of hooking up with a LMB or a SMB as well :smt002 The faster tip (IMO) has a better percentage of driving that hook into hardy mouths such as Stripers and bass - especially when you have a lot of line behind you. Oh...and I don't use a down rigger either so I don't really need the noodle type of rod.

I tend to look for combos (rod & reel) that can handle multiple species...this thought allows me to limit my "personal inventory"  :smt003

Yeah, but the shimanos are pricier AND the smaller reels don't have cickers :smt011

Yes, I prefer this method better than using line counters or colored lead core lines. Simple yet effective...for me at least.

Note: With the salmon season closed, I'll be trout trolling more this season....especially above the foothill lakes. My ultimate goal is a road trip to Trinity for SMB and brown trout  :smt007

Joel how much does it weigh does it have a disengaging level wind I like the ones that don't for trolling;

Here is a link to a rebate coupon.http://www.abugarcia.com/media/File/122940AbuC3C4Rec1.19.5Coupon.pdf

Do they make them the right way? :smt003

Mike - the reel specs are:

*gear ratio: 5.3:1
*line capacity: 10# test / 170 yds
*weight: 9.9 ounces
*3 stainless steel bearings
*Instant anti-reverse
*on/off spool click
*fast cast thumb bar

...and yes, they make 'em with the "WIERD WAY"  = right hand retrieve  :smt002

SOLD!  I got the same rod, paired with a used Shimano Cardiff 301a, and the reel drove me nuts.  Think there must be something wrong with it.  But I didn't really like the way it felt either.  I'm gonna pick up one of these Abu's today, for fishing this weekend.  Thanks for the review!
