Hi all you great fisherman,I had a dilly of a time out of Linda Mar last Saturday.I'm very new to the kayak fishing but not new to ocean fishing. The launch went very well ,the tide was a minus and things were safe for launching.I've done my homework on this great new stlye of fishing and enjoying what mother nature has to offer us if you don't get SEA SICK.Hooked a nice fish by Pacific Pier and it poopped off early into the fight.Had a great day on the water.Coming in at Linda Mar was fun,I had my first expirence flipping or rolling rover in the surf.I didn't get discouraged and only lost my net off the Kayak and it was retreaved without a problem.I seen some posts that said to go without gear and pratice ,practice  and i should get better with every launch, i hope so.See you guys and gals on the water.Lingcodlonny

It's true.  Practicing launches and landings without gear is a big confidence builder.  Last Wednesday, I fished with Jason for a few hours and spent another two hours playing in the surf.  It was the first time I tried to surf my Prowler, and I learned a lot about how the boat handles.  Most importantly, I learned how to avoided getting dumped when landing in the white stuff.

HeyLonny,
Chuck  encouraged me to to the same, I live in Pacifica and went out on sunday to play in the waves. The conditions were great for the surfers, but not for launching a yak. I did learn alot, stood up on it, moved around it getting into all my hatches, and alot of practice in the surf. I took a verbal beating by all the surfers, I wouldn't recommend practicing on the weekend. I was a little out numbered, and they aren't the nicest group.

I had that experience at Davenport. The "surfers" were pissed cause I took "their" parking space...and they were also pissed because I was going to take "their" waves as well......."little" did they realize that I was out there to fish and NOT kayak surf. Maybe if they saw the numerous fishing rods sticking out of my kayak...they would have left me alone...which by the way, were VERY visible....and yes, they do seem tougher when they have their buddies around them.....this why I pack a flare gun  :smt072 ...and my divers knife stays visible  :smt065.....AND I also have Fred Savage to cover my back  :smt062

I'm thinking of putting a visible NRA sticker on my kayak...to "calm" 'em down  :smt066

no offense to the surfers on this board.....Jeff W.  :smt003

Joel,

I have alot of surfer friends as well, But on this paticular day (with the absence or a dive knofe or flare gun) they made great targets for my landings. I was amazed at how far a stupid look and a apology (on my part) got me. I did decide on leaving after about 2 hours though.

yeah, both of my neighbors are surfers too.....we always give each other the finger (in a hateful but friendly manner) :smt098  when we see each other  :smt003 But they seem to like me when I stand on their front door with fresh fish fillets dangling from my hands  :smt007

I used to get attitude too from some surfers in Santa Cruz too, but after a couple of months and seeing me & my truck & my kayak at the beach every weekend the "you better look out for white sharks kook" turned into "hey brah what did you catch today?" Kayaks are becoming prolific at all the beaches, and just like a newbie surfer with a board, the resident surfers are always a little wary. "Does this goombah know what he's doing or is he going to stack into me with his yak as I'm trying to paddle out?" goes through their heads. Once they realize you're cool & not there to get in their way it seems like kayakers just kind of blend in with the rest of the beach scene, like skimboarders or spongers or bodysurfers.

If they're rude, just clean your catch a little past their lineup.  ;)

This is real simple, basically we want the smallest waves to land are yaks in, right?  So, you should know where that spot is when you launch and then land in the same spot, if there are surfers there giving looks or attitude :smt012  just  call them on it, "hey, why are you guys lined up at the smallest waves on this beach ya kooks."  :smt018  I use to surf so I kind of know how to play the field.  When I come in I stay outside during the bigger waves and then haul ass between sets, I let them know in advance that I'm gonna do this and also to watch as I'll probabley eat shit and yard sale my gear everywhere.  :surf  Seems to work for me so far.  I guess it would be a different story if your out there practicing but there are always breaks to be found that aren't being used.  JTF..
