Had a UCLA classmate in town for work.  Wanted to take him out for a quick paddle before watching the Xavier game, so that ruled out a drive to Carmel or DV.  Chose SCR.  The night before Dilbeck hooked us up with a dozen or so healthy minnows.  Thanks man!! :smt023  I also brought trolling gear so we were set.

Didn't get OTW until about 1100.  My friend turned vegetarian so he declined to fish.  Me...well, even if I've got a dog in my lap, I'm gonna drag a lure.  We headed straight to the South end of the lake to see how many of dilbeck's minnows would commit suicide in my honor.  Water level is high, so there was a lot of flooded brush, weeds, timber, etc.  After losing 5 minnows to sunken wood, I decided to troll around.  Tied on a small gold kastmaster and paid out about ~70 yds of line.  Didn't get hit until we were close to the dam.  First hit didn't stick so I made another pass.  same spot, another hit.  small but clean stocker, released.  Saw lots of surface fish, so if you were so inclined, all it would take to clean up a limit of DFG stockers is to troll around for a bit, toplining anything shiny.

ran into a nice guy in a blue yak (see last pic) - NCKA?  I'm sure he cleaned up on a C & R limit of stockers.  Said he was banging 8-10"ers en masse.

As to the position of my canine, well, I would have put him in the tankwell, didn't want him to jump into the water.  Too much risk especially with tackle aboard.  here are the pics.

martin, I think you might need to move on from the dog to the kids...  :smt002 The dog-love is starting to make me cringe a little. don't get me wrong, I had a dog. but really...

anyways, good job with the pure artificials! GB2 would be proud,  :smt001

I hit it later, like 3:30 to 6 ? and boated 2 on crawlers behind a dodger. forgot my net and one jumped out of the boat while de-hooking. Then, with the sun going down, I saw a guy hucking a 10" swimbait, for the bass that eat the planters presumably. right about then I got a good hit and then a much better hit and something took my line into my other line and tangled me good. I wonder if my "real" swimbait caught something else? whatever it was, it got off close to the boat and left me with both rods tangled but all my gear intact. with the sun going down and my rods tangled, I paddled in, but the bite was probably really on then.

yes, Abking, I brought my camera, even in the boat, and yes, I saw the osprey nail a trout and fly off with difficulty in a strong wind, but no, did not take a picture. (I know!  :smt010).

last week was two rods out, a limit, no tangles, nothing lost except 2.5 nightcrawlers and this week was a reminder that two rods out and no net is an invitation to disaster. well, it was exciting anyways.

Looks like you and your classmate had a nice time.  Sorry to hear about the difficulty with the minnows - I swear they liked flirting with the big 'uns for me.

BTW, go Bruins!  I have them winning it all.  My gramps is an alum and I'm all about rooting for the West Coast.

Hey, Martin that was me. Your eight to ten inch guess about the fish size was good but I have to brag that on my last run I was able to bring in a seven incher. I went out again today and it was a little better with five trout (all hooked clean enough for C & R) between 10 and twelve inches. I got to meet Splashdown out there. Nice day till the wind really kicked up around 2:00pm.

See you out there.

good job on keeping a yellow lab in the boat!  that's a feat worthy of some sort of award

I seriously doubt there would be any way in he## that Bella would stay in the yak (she tries to swim in the tub and our kiddie pool!)

Thats pretty cool! I thought your dog was much smaller though. He needs his own yak so you can just tow him around. Or a sidecar! Do they make sidecars for yaks? That would be sweet!
With such small planter trout, it might be a good idea to throw a big swimbait around.
Thanks for the report+pics yakuza,

Ditto!

Martin, I know your dog's frisky on land, but he looks totally at peace in the kayak.  That's so cool!

Can you get him to stay put in the tankwell?

Very cool indeed! I had a black lab who loved going but I could not take her out in a regular boat, let alone a 'yak.

If we were skiing, she'd jump out and get the rope handle. If we were fishing she'd want to fetch the fish for us.

I think if I'd have taken her out in a 'yak she would push off when I had a fish on and dump me before I could boat the fish. I do miss that dog tho!

Thanks for the post and photos!

I have been driving past a bunch of times the past few weeks, I bring my pole and through gold kastmasters, the fishing has been pretty good. Did they ever end up stalking it last week?

Did they ever end up stalking it last week?

read on the schedule that SCR was stalked last week.  The hearsay was that stocking occurred on thursday.  Seems to make sense because I saw a lot of fish caught in proximity to the launch.

With such small planter trout, it might be a good idea to throw a big swimbait around.

Well, I haven't heard of anyone having much luck chucking the big wood trout lures like the MS Slammer.  But it makes sense that trout imitators would work like they do at Coyote or Castaic.  jmairey hits SCR more so maybe he can comment.

Martin, I know your dog's frisky on land, but he looks totally at peace in the kayak.  That's so cool!

It was fun fishing with the dog.  Gonna try that more often in the South Bay lakes.  Gonna try to plug the drive with the mirage cartridge so the dog can position himself forward of me, giving us each a little more room.  I'm really surprised he didn't jump out after all the cormorants, ducks, and the fish.  typically he's completely ADD, but saturday he was pretty chill.  may have had something to do with 2 shots of benadryl and an electric shock collar!   :smt044.  J/K.  I had him in an easy walk harness (see the strap across his chest) so his movement was a little restricted.  i tried having him sit in the tankwell when he was a puppy (last year when I ran into Zeelander at Lexington before the big drain), but tough to keep an eye on him.  sorry jmairey for all the nauseating dog talk.

Hey, Martin that was me.

Sand2Water - good meeting you OTW.  I liked your trolling setups.  Looked like you effectively covered a lot of water.

At least you didn't get skunked like me. Go Bruins!
