way back when wilderness systems first introduced the Kaos, it was a SIK that was painted like a killer whale. I have a flyer somewhere in my kayak porn collection. ill look later and scan it unless someone else has it already to post. really was a hot looking boat.

Orcas are hunting salmon now in the Monterey Bay, so you might just scare away the salmon!

I know nothing about shark or whale eyes, but I would bet they really can't distinguish a 2 dimensional image on the bottom of a kayak. My understanding is that one of the main theories for why GW's sometimes attack surfers is that the silhouette from below looks like a seal, hence the Aussie decal pattern Zeelander posted which presumably attempts to break up the outline of the surfboard-"seal". Also mentioned previously, big bold stripes might serve the same purpose.
Who know why GW's ever attack kayaks--my guess is it's probably territorial--but if there's a way to make them think it's NOT any kind of animal, I would opt for that route.

Again, I'm no expert, but I'd bet you're safe to paint a KW image on your yak for decorative purposes (would anyone see it?).

If folks are worried about becoming part of the food chain then I don't think we should be on the water on "tupperware".  I don't think any color or pattern on a yak or board will necessarily lessen the very rare chances of being chomped.  Whatever the theory is, it could backfire.

We are much more likely to get in a car accident while driving to and from the launch.  I'd be honored to be eaten by an orca, and if a GW ever bothers me, I'll punch it direct in the nose.

My worst fear is to be slowly consumed by Penguins.  Now we're talking horror.

OK, once again, I'm no biologist, but I do remember the now famous footage from like a decade ago off the Farallons (I think) of the KW killing a great white, and then her and her calf consumed it.  I remember hearing the eyewitness say that it appeared that the GW was threatening the calf and the KW reacted in a protective manner.  All that aside, when it happened I was in a marine biology class at college.  The professor who was a former employee of the SCRIPPS institute was all excited about the footage and said that is what probably happened.  On this subject, I can only go off my own experience in this world.  What my experience tells me is: If a GWS sees a dead baby KW floating around, he is going to eat it LIKEitAINTnoTHANG!

If I am wrong about that, let me be wrong... I've come to accept that I am wrong most the time, (depending on who you ask)  I for one am not about to paint my kayak to make it look like a "potential" prey item for the Landlord.  I guess I am taking the "better safe than sorry" approach to this subject.

wonder if any GWS from South Africa has ever eaten a baby zebra? ...i'm checking YouTube,  right now!
I think we'll be safe on the west side with a zebra patterned Yak-bottom.
