When you were under Pacifico you were looking at him w/ human eyesight. Most shark's eyesight, including the GWS, are 10 times more sensitive to light than a humans. So it's possible that even from a backlight subject, that the shark could still make out a pattern. Also you were looking straight up at the prey (sorry Pacifico :smt002) while GWS are well known to circle their prey and look very carefully before a vertical strike. So when the prey isn't backlight it's possible the shark could see a possible threat (maybe a pattern) and call off an attack. Lastly, when hunting, sharks use their sense of smell when far from prey but when they get closer they rely on their eye sight. I think it's possible that the shark relying on it's sight and taking slow steps could see a pattern and decide it's not a good target. But now we have to see if that fingerprint pattern really does relay that message. :smt002

Holy crap, my theory is out....take a look at Angel aka the Prey's divelight  :smt011  Maybe its visible cause of the camera's flash  :smt003  Figures, fabio accessorizes and kills my whole theory.

I don't know, FWIW this day was really sunny and had very good vis, +20 feet..easy...the pics didn't capture the clarity very well. When diving under the yaks I couldn't see the color till I was about 8-10' away.  Ab diving up north while surfacing under the yaks in crappy viz and grey skies they do just look like big dark solid objects. Next time I'm in the water I'll get better shots and we can play "guess what whitey sees"  :smt001

BTW...the "Prey" would most likely get tagged....heard rumors that he pees in his suit.   :smt011

I want my kayak to look like a kayak.  At least one GWS out there knows kayaks aren't edible.
I'm with Eric on this one. :smt003

Hearing us talk, a bystander would envision an ocean literally packed with circling Great Whites planning their next step... constantly surveying us from below.

Dang Dude your letting the object of this discussion out of the bag. BOO-AHH beware NEWBIE! :smt044

(this shot was at a range of about 5 feet, angel was roughly 17 feet from the bottom but the greens in the suit do manage to break up the silohuette.....somewhat.  IMO wearing the speedo on the outside kind of killed it but who am I to critique a fashionista.)

If I were a GW I would make a wide birth too before using my other sense especially the smell catagory :smt005 No really Angel are those really Speedo's :smt007

Wow!  I'm gone for a few minutes trying to make enough to pay the bills and I come back to find that I'm being used as a case study.  Talk about a dream come true.   :smt003

Yes those are speedo's.  For some reason Art thought it was appropriate to buy another man underwear.  I was going to school him about it but then I remembered that as a kid he had bumped his head too many times running to the back of the short bus.  Rather than hurt his feelings I went ahead and wore them on the outside of my suit.  Little did I know he'd be carrying a few copies of the picture in his wallet at all times and the digi version loaded onto his USB drive so he can post it at a moments notice.

We now return to your previously scheduled pointless conversation....carry on.  :smt003

You could always tow a dolphin made out of styrofoam behind your yak.:smt002 Mythbusters did an episode where the gw's always kept their distance and away from the bait when the dolphin was floating around. Once they removed the styrofoam dolphin, the gw's charged ahead for the bait.

Can't get simplier than that!...they come cheap in the blow-up varieties and could act as another safty-float device! :smt002  couldBEtheCURE-ALL!

Why not go one step farther & go for the real thing?
That's it, I'm selling my kayak & will now fish exclusivley from a dolphin (I hear they have good secondary stablity & natural rudders, plus one bow area rod holder).

Just to tie back to the original post, the deterrent was part of my intent.  Without getting too scientific and based on butterflies and fish that mimic big eyes in their patterning, I figured a graphic pair of big eyes and a toothy mouth would stand out and provide enough uncertainty that a big shark or KW would think twice.  I doubt there would be any attractive effect and it also looks cool and is a sort of joke (on the GWS and KW and those who kayak fish and are really afraid of such things)  :smt044 .  I kind of like how the mouth on mine looks like a big lingcod mouth.

Finally ran across a small picture of the kayak that was manufactured with the orca design. It was the SIK version of the current WS Kaos design. Was originally crafted by Morro bay kayaks and the rights were sold to WS. It was called the Alamax, pronuonced Alamoc and means killer whale.

Years ago there was a dive special on tv, had some guys off of the Great Barrier Reef trying different things.  There were 2 of interest.  One was a chain mail for divers, the other was a wet suit that looked like a poisonous snake off the reef.  It was some sort of snake even sharks fear, it was nothing more than black and white stripes.  Kind of looked like a wet suit for convicts.  They had a dummy with the suit on and every time they put in a school of sharks they vacated the area.  If I recall I think they tried it on a Great White and it left as well.
