Hi guys,

A vacuum packer has been on my list for a long time, and this being my second year kayaking I expect to get more use out of the smoker than ever....  now's the time.

I know several of you have vacuum packers...  care to discuss the relative merits of the various makes and models?

Thanks,
Eric

You can't go wrong with the FoodSaver brand.  Here are some different models available from Cabelas:

Whatever you do, make sure you use the FoodSaver bags.  I've tried other less expensive bags and have always been disappointed.  The best deal on bags is at Costco.  Every year, I buy at least one value box with multiple rolls of the large and small size bags.  It's around $40 a box, but well worth it.

I agree w/ ChuckE on this. I use the Deluxe and it's been worth the price. Still eating fish I caught last September and as tasty as the day I caught it!

I have the smallest cheapest Food Saver unit, only uses the small size bags, very seldom do I wish I had the bigger one, unfortunately the Costco pack includes both sizes so I usually pay retail for my bags.

As far as I'm concerned, it's the only way to freeze fish.

The Reynold's Handy-Vac. It's a brand new product. Not near as nice as the Food Saver line. However, it only costs $10 and works great. Yeah, cheap like me.
So I'm packing my bags for the Misty Mountains, where the spirits go...........

I bought my foodsaver mini on sale for $40 from kohls.  It came with a 25 foot roll of bags.  I love it.

I've been using the FoodSaver Turbo for 4 years. Have kept frozen fish for up to a year.  It's worked well for me and I would recommend it.

Besides price, what is the difference between the game saver and food saver models? Both use the same bags...

No difference... just the name to appeal to sportsmen.  It's all made by Food Saver.

:party Hey Eric!  how goes it?
Like the others said, spend the money and get a Foodsaver Brand, The vacuum pumps in those seem to last much longer, like anything else, you are going to get what you pay for.
Getting it at Kohles is a great idea, find the sale and then apply for the credit card for another 15% off  :smt002

I have the foodsaver package that CostCo sells. Like others have said, it works great! The CostCo one also comes with the foodsaver jars and the mason jar attachment which is really nice for keeping your coffee fresh.  :smt003

I finally wore out the original Food Saver I bought almost 10 years ago at Costco.

I recently bought the Food Saver Advanced from Costco and they have made significant improvements. You can now adjust the level of vacuum, which is good since the older model sometimes squeezed all the juice out of the fish... :smt004

I have to put my vote in.  Foodsavers I think are the best.  But get the Profesional III Plus or similar models (Gamesaver Turbo Plus).  I have compared this model to the newer more common models, and I think the features and function of the Pro model makes it worth the extra $$$.  http://www.foodsaver.com/ProductDetails.aspx?productid=4896
