Usal road IS the long way around!  Don't ever go on it in the rainy season, and ONLY take it to Shelter Cove if you're up for a long detour...  The proper route to Shelter Cove is 101 to Redway then over the hills from there on Shelter Cove Road - it's only about 45 minutes from 101.   :smt001

I hear you, Hawkbro.  I'm totally down with the campfire mojo, but the thought of a warm bed, shower, a little late night tube along with my last couple of brews...  heaven my friend!  I'll hang at camp with you guys, but I'm totally in touch with my own desire for some comforts to go with my all-day-salmon-hookups!  Etienne:  I'll do a little poking around when I'm down there around the opener and I'll chime back in here with some rates and other info.

And morning TV?  Blasphemy, my Man!   :smt012  I was first on the water last year!   :smt002

Can't wait!   :smt006

Thanks Dale and Eric; I won't even think about taking the dreaded Usal Road.

Matt:

Asa Spade had a very simple and effective salmon setup with a banana weight and a cut bait - have him show you.  I run with a $20 tackle setup on the rod during trolling (DeepSix, flasher, double hook slip rig with a chovie), and his was a couple bucks...  I like mine better, but he caught the last two salmon of the day when we went.   :smt001  The campground is ideal for sleeping in a vehicle if you don't have a good tent.  Wind and rain are not unlikely to occur...

Hi im A newbee, and im just wondering were shelter cove is?Im from Salinas .
Hey hey Fishmaster!
Me and sackyak are driving up there from Marina and Seaside. It is a long drive but totally worth it. Especially if we come home with salmon steaks and crabs!
There is possibly an open spot for you too. I guess it will depend on whether sackyak can cruise with me on Thursday afternoon. And even if he does carpool w/me there might be room. The tough part will be fitting 3 yaks on my roof, and having enough room for all our gear.

Matt! Glad to hear you're joining us!

Man, this is gonna be an epic adventure. Hopefully evolving into an Annual NCKA Event.
I will go back to my og post and start a list of participants. I also like Swellrider's idea of organizing food...otherwise we'll end up with too much excess. Its good to pack light. And to answer the Q about wives...I think it w/b fine to invite our 'better-halves.' Don't see why not. Granted, I know my wife isn't going, so maybe thats why I'm so lenient....because that decision wouldn't affect me LOL!

Woohoo! Can you tell I'm excited!

I'm planning on coming and using my poptop camper.  But wanted to know if wifes are disinvited.  I got a camper so I could have my wife share in some of my advantures and reduce the cost of room and restaurants.  If someone else comes up from the Bay area, I can probably bring up another yak and gear if not too much, and can accomodate another, even two in the camper since it sleeps 5 easily.

Suggestion:  any doubts about hauling a yak and you could contact Hawk/Swellrider about him bringing an extra as a rental from his fleet.  It's an excellent opportunity to demo something like an X-Factor which comes ready with rod holders and hatches.

On the wife thing, I thought, "WIVES?  We don't need no stinkin' wives!"  but then again, IF mine wanted to come I'd be in some deep doo if I didn't accomodate her and the little guys.  I'd say if you bring your wife and you don't get a hotel room you're either one of those perma-WAF types or you're suicidal!  Anyway, I don't believe mine will want to come since we'll be out on the yaks all day.  I'm hoping to come down Friday and home Sunday, but that's pushing it around my place.  I should at least be able to come down first thing Saturday and go home Sunday...

Yeah, PK, I'm getting stoked for this.  Be sure to bring your arsenal of rockfishing gear so we can at least salvage some bait-soaking time if the Wx is too wild.

Sorry to get carried away with Cove pics!  You're lucky I've only got some limited archives here at work!!

Hahaha! That first pic reminded me about how I forgot swimtrunks last year! LOL! Thanks for letting me borrow a pair, etienne!
Note to self: bring board shorts.

You KNOW I'll bring some shorefishing gear too. Even if we all limit on salmon, I still plan to hit the rocks for a bit.

Here's my first Cove salmon from a few years ago.

I'm goin' freakin' coo-coo for cocoa puffs right now!   :smt007

Matt - the second shot below shows the DeepSix, flasher/dodger, slip rig setup - with hoochie (optional)...  It also shows the size of fish we usually catch early in the year down there.  PK and I are guilty of teaser shots with big Summertime fish.   :smt002

I think by all means Yes, wives no problemo! Be warned though I saw some straight debauchery there last year. I'm talking naked animals and everything :smt009

PK-I need to double check with the misses but you guys are welcome to crash at my place on Thursday and we can hit the SF Eel early friday and be to SC by nightfall. I've only got one extra room but plenty of floor space (RV space Marmite) and Tent space at my pad in Eureka.

Will get back about Menu, but definitely grilling something. The Farmers Alamanac says we'll have decent weather!

Guitarzan,

When you show a real classic Gibson tuning head like that, I am reminded of the 1930's.

I grew up on steel string Martin D28s.  Now I just have a simple generic nylon string guitar..

What kind of music do you like?

Thats one sweet axe to grow up on. Actually, I leave the Gib at home these days and bring the Yamaha. The Gibsons a 1932, signed by Les Paul, and doesnt go camping anymore... I play all kinds, Beatles to Zeppelin, Hank Williams to Santana. Ill bring lyrics.
Its a gas when everyone cuts loose and joins in. Do you have a camp guitar? Ben

I am planning on making the trip unless the weather is bad. If anyone wants to carpool from the east bay, PM me. Haven't decided on camping vs hotel.
