I'm heading down to Pismo for President's weekend with some wheeling friends but I want to get out in the water for some fishies.  I wanted to ask the collective what's out there now and where should I launch from.  I'm kind of a noob to kayak fishing but not one for fishing even though I've been on hiatus due to family changes - KIDS and learning how to improve the WAF.

I went looking through the old posts and did find Avila and Shell beach but we will be in the dunes and I'll probably carpool with the others down there.  So would surf launching from the dunes be worth it?  Target fish - what's running there or will be running there next month?  Thanks for any help for the noob. There is always an open invitation for others to join.  I'm the "hired" chef/bartender for the weekend for our pack.  Thanks again.

I wouldn't bring the yak. Rockfish season (from yak) will still be closed. I'd suggest fishing for perch from the beach. The bite peaks in late Feb so you s/b there at a good time for surfperch.
Or, if you can borrow a car, drive to some rocky coastline and try for shore rockfish.
Might want to check out the msg board on www.pierfishing.com because there are a few guys who fish down there regularly.
Good luck!

well shore fishing is your only bet for this time of year.
I will say i took my tarpon to the beach on one occasion just for fun to see if i could make it past the surf. and it was impossible most waves are 5 footers really close together.
so thats the thing it is almost impossible to get past the surf especially this time of year.
if you do decide to go during rock fish season from a vessel your best local bet would be to launch from the shore at Avila beach by the pier. Hopefully i will be able to do it this year. I am at pismo about 8 times a year so hopefully i can make the fishing season.

the waves there can be pretty tough, but if you do make it out, it might be far enough south that some flatties would be in the 30-60FOW area.

if it was me, I would bring my surfcasting gear and go for those fiesty little gamefish perch.

Goodluck and have fun!

I have to agree with shotgun and scallen.  The surf their is very tough to get through lots of waves very close together and very powerful if you did go for a swim.  I was just there on sunday and the surf was easily 4-6 feet with waves just one after the other.  surf perch is your best bet.
