Anybody know of a good shoe for open water? Them tootsies get cold when hanging over the side of the boat.
I've been looking at some NRS shoes, but they are a little thin and made for walking rivers. Is a seal skin sock and a bootie under a shoe as good as anything?

Not trying to be a smarta$$ or anything, but try the search feature of the site before asking general questions like this.  It's not that people don't mind answering, it's just that you'll probably find a lot more info - a lot faster.  For example, typing "footwear" in the search box yielded this:

Hahaha...guess I'm not as clever as it seems.   I guess you'll have to type it in yourself to see the bountiful plethora of footwear threads I discovered.  :smt003

Funny you should point this out... I tried the search as well as searching a couple other items I have questions about and got nothing. I then searched through, page by page, until I found the answers to a fish finder question I had around page six but didn't see anything on shoes other than some info about seal skins. Operator error? Probably, but I figured feet deserved a spot somewhere in the first six pages.

My feet thank you.

Edit: I just put "footwear" into the search option and got two hits - both from this thread. Should I have a few beers or something before I try it again?

Edit (Part two): I tried again and found the info you referred to. Dunno what went wrong the first time but, damn, I'm gonna miss those beers.

I have the nrs atb wet boot. It has a heavy duty sole and very warm. I was at lake sonoma when it was freexing and was comfortable all day. I tryed using my dive booties but to thin on the sole and the rocks and pebbles were hard on the feet. I am think about getting some waterproof socks for additional comfort.

Just to add to the post Mooch searched up- my Sealskinz socks don't keep the water out as (I think) they advertise.  I still think whether your feet get cold depends on the individual as much as what you wear.  The last time I went out on a cold morning I had on: light wool socks(dress socks), Sealskinz socks, neoprene socks, NRS lace-up workboots.  My feet were still on the cold side, but it was bearable.  And I had plenty of clothing on the rest of my body, including a squid lid.  For me, the problem seems to be the inactive legs.  I considered a Hobie, but several people have told me their feet not only get cold sometimes, they get numb as if nerves get pinched.
On the other extreme, a few days ago, I was walking near the Crow's Nest at the SantaCruz Harbor wearing a heavy shirt and jacket - it was in the 50's and windy- and I saw a guy wearing nothing but a Speedo, booties and a bushy beard paddling a P13 standing up on the seat area (no add-on seat) holding one end of the paddle as a handle. Wish I'd had my camera.  I did wonder whether he had chemical help, if so, it didn't affect his balance.

I figured waders was the way to go for cold weather paddling...

Just out of curiosity, those of you wearing the NRS boots, I assume you're wearing wetsuits?

I am going kayaking in the Sierras in a couple weeks and I want to be warm!

Sometimes - they're nice to wear with shorts too.   :smt001

Just out of curiosity, those of you wearing the NRS boots, I assume you're wearing wetsuits?

I am going kayaking in the Sierras in a couple weeks and I want to be warm!

As mentioned in the threads that were referred to, I wear the NRS workboot. I still stand by my statements, and have now completed 2 seasons in a pair of boots that I purchased already slightly used. No sign of them wearing out yet. I use them with my drysuit, or with a wetsuit.

I also picked up a pair of NRS 3 mm lightweight booties last winter, to wear inside a WW SIK. I wound up using them in the ocean for a couple trips this year, and felt they kept my feet warm as well.

Keep in mind that my extremities tend to stay warm when others are getting cold. So what works for me, may not be enough for someone else.

Regards,
Scott

P.S. Regarding waders vs wetsuit: I evaluate the conditions of each trip, but it boils down to if the water temp is closer to 40 than to 60, and if there's any likelihood of my spending more than a couple minutes in the water, then I won't be wearing waders.

I always wear a farmer john wetsuit in the salt in No. Calif.. A couple of times it was warm and calm enough to pull the top half down to my waist.  I might be warmer if I wore waders and dry clothing under, but if I flipped in 50-60 deg water, got wet inside and wasn't close to shore, I think I'd get hypothermia.
I'd wear my full surfing wetsuit, but it binds my shoulders when yakking- not much of a problem paddling a board tho for some reason.

I am sure that Mooch will chime in but you can also wear tennis shoes with your wetsuit to keep warm.
