I think it has been discussed before and don't remember the general feeling, but what about a few extra bonus points for winning any one of the half dozen derbies throughout the year.  Obviously this doesn't benefit myself but would most definitely help some.  Thoughts, suggestions?

I agree with Eric and think the individual species prizes should remain intact.
Not all of us get a chance to go after every species much less get out as much as we would like. At least with the individual species everyone has an equal chance of winning. Take that away and only those who go out all the time will be the winners. Why would the majority want to enter if it is only the minority who has a chance of winning anything?

Bsteves is currently #10 and I am pretty sure he did not make it out as much as a lot of people. It is highly likely that we will end up with prizes all the way to #20 with the response I am getting so far from sponsors.

Again the spirit behind AOT is to get out and fish a lot of places and species you might not otherwise fish for. Single species prizes do not follow that spirit.

whatever you said, Bill :worship
yeah, Brian is just good fisherman... Even though he fishes less then (I would said 1/4) me, he targets the species & put the time to research them & prepare for them well... or use Ashley's tackle box... :smt044
it is sucks that lose individual prices, but I know how hard to get the sponsors...  maybe we just gave away candies instead! :smt003

O Man! You guys are so screwed! I just signed up for 08 AOTY! Bill, you should have $40 in paypal from a 'crazyforcards@....' today. Thats me! Thanks for setting this thing up...seems like it probably takes up a lot of your time. So, Thank You. And Thanks to everybody else who helps put this on too!

I did not participate in 07 but it seems like the individual species' prize/title is worthwhile. Maybe offer the option to throw-in a side pot of like 5 bucks/person IF they want to compete in an individual-species competition..? I'd throw-down another 5 bucks if there was a chance I could win a piece of paper that displayed the title "Biggest Cabezon of 2008"! That would go on the mantle above the fireplace!
Kind of joking, but also open to a side pot,

Never participated but I think its points per inch.  So a 30" salmon is worth 150 points.  Could be wrong but somebody will chime in.

I think Bill should start a AOTY smack talk thread. I'm in this year.

OK I updated the rules to remove the mention of panfish, make the legality of fish entered clearer and I also added that fish must be entered within 2 weeks of being caught.

Thanks Bill,

Not that I'll be able to compete this year, but I'm glad you added the "no sand-bagging" rule.  (Ah-mcfsh, *cough*, ah-hmm.)

I'll see what I can do about including the two week rule into the logic of the AOTY application.

Thanks Bill... a couple of editorial comments.

Rule #5 still mentions panfish (with a Barry Bond's Asterisk).

Rule 10 should say "...within two weeks...".  (typo)

What ever happened to adjusting the points system as described here?

Good catches EK thanks!

Ah yes thanks for reminding me. Let's go with the modified points scale unless anyone is totally opposed.

Hey Bill,

I added the two week rule to the AOTY application.  I forgot how easy Ruby on Rails can be...

Code: [Select]
  def validate
  errors.add("You must enter your fish within 14 days of catching it!", "This catch is too old.") if date < Date.today - 14
  end

Here's another validation I'm thinking about adding.  Let me know what you think.

Code: [Select]
  def validate
  errors.add(:size, "is invalid", "That measuring device is banned.") if login == "Danglin" & ruler == "old blue magic"
  end
