Why are you calling him a jackass? He simply made poor decisions. When any NCKAers commit boo-boos, they say so, take any advice and go from there, but we don't call them jackasses.

In fact, Frankfishing got stuck in the mud once while fishing near the Dumbarton Bridge. Nobody called him a jackass. He told everybody and the incident was taken as a lesson learned about monitoring the tide table more carefully..

The man back east made two serious errors in judgement and is very lucky to be alive (and still married). But he isn't a jackass.

Granted, we don't know this guy. So we can't say for sure that he is a jackass (maybe he is; maybe he isn't). However, it is fairly easy to surmise that his actions are jackass-like. [This, coming from somebody who has admittedly made a few jackass-like decisions (me)]  :smt044

Sounds like my old neighbor, he had a 12 ft aluminum boat he used to take out in the ocean, trouble was he could never get anyone to go with him a second time, he ultimately lost the boat in the surf one day and his wife was kind enough to never let him have another one.

What a waste of good decent human conversation deciding who is and isn't a jack ass.

Whatever that means, when somebody calls somebody else "stupid".

I am very stupid and proud of it.   That's how I learn.  And a love my PFD.  So there.

(I guess I told them pretty well)  Heh.

Sounds like the guy was foolish.  We can and should all learn from it, and we can probably all agree it was foolish.  Hopefully HE learned from it - take more safety gear and a communications device.  For the first years of yak-fishing the ocean I didn't use a PFD and certainly had NO safety gear such as that that I carry with me now:  GPS, compass, whistle, flares, pump, extra paddle, VHF, cell phone, food, water...etc.  I was being foolish - just as this guy was.

A couple of definitions of jackass:

-fathead: a man who is a stupid incompetent fool  (I don't buy it - how can you "stop being such a jackass!" if it's such a permanent label?)

-an offensive term that deliberately insults somebody's intelligence  (wrong again - "stop being such a jackass!" is more of a plea to a peer than an insult - IMJO)

For me, a jackass is more of a person who says and/or does ridiculous things to get attention, or to be funny or obnoxious in a humorous way.  I've never minded being a jackass - it's actually a big part of my gregarious nature.   :smt001

Now, when Johnny Knoxville and his goon squad put a baby carrier on top of a van and drove off with it hitting the street - or pretended to crash a bike with a baby riding behind the adult, they WERE being stupid fools - they gave the word jackass a bad name!

I need to get out on my yak!

Jackass \Jack"ass`\, n. [2d jack + ass.]

1. The male ass; a donkey.

2. A conceited dolt; a perverse blockhead.

This definition's a little closer to my understanding of it.  If you can temper your "conceitedness" with some degree of selflessness and an appreciation for community and sharing then you can be a good kind of jackass.    :smt003

The man's name is Pfaffenbichler.   Give him a break.   He's lived for 68 years and he likes to kayak and his wife needs him.   How many children or grand children?  Family joys and tragedies?   When anyone in this group can be so lucky please post it.
But "Jackass" is not spelled "Pfaffenbichler".

Sorry.   I just get upset when it sounds like people judging other people without really knowing them, and the internet makes it even more easy, and I do expect more of this fine group.

Abking,   I hope you and the family enjoy this weekend.  Great times for beachcombing.
