Monterey / Carmel Wed 7/1 - Fri 7/3

Hi All,

I'm in the Monterey Area and am hoping for two days of kayak fishing, Wed 7/1 - Fri 7/3. I was thinking:
1. Carmel / SWS / rock fish day
2. Monterey / squid / halibut (and some rock fish?)

I'm open to other ideas as well. Let me know if anyone is interested in joining! (we don't have to fish right next to each other, but always good to have others out. Although I'm assuming Monterey will have some people out, but I'm less sure about SWS).

I’m also looking to go out on Friday, let me know where you end up going that day, I’ve only been out of HMB as well as in the bay out of oyster point. Went on a guided fishing tour out of Monterey once a while back but would love to go back out there with some company.

My son and I plan to go Monterey on Friday (Orange and Light Blue Hobies). We will try squid from red can and hoping to get rock fish afterward. We have no idea where to go for rocks. Should we continue to Lover's Point or turn back to east side of Coast Guard? Hopefully we can get there by 7.  Chris and Isaac

I've never really fished that area, so I don't have first hand experience. I'll let others respond. I can see rocks on my Navionics app around Pt Pinos, but there is a marine sanctuary on the south side of it so you need to be careful not to go in that area.

I’ll be there Friday and would love to tag along. Where are you planning on launching from? I’m in a Red outback

We plan to launch from Coast Guard pier, head west for squids then find rocks. From MPA website, Edward Richetts SMCA is allowed for fin fishing.

I was curious about the rocks in front of them from Google Map earlier, thanks for the confirmation!!!

If you haven’t been there before here’s something I wish someone told me - keep an eye on the SMRs inshore of that red can! And don’t rely on where others are fishing thinking “they’re doing it so it must be legal”

If going for rockfish in Monterey I’d launch off coral st in Pacific grove. There’s a small beach there that stays pretty calm unless the swell is absolutely raging, in which case you shouldn’t be out there anyway. It’s about a 5 minute drive from the coast guard pier. I’ve included a picture of the launch spot below. It also puts you about the same distance from the squid grounds as the coast guard pier. It would also be in your best interest to check the sandy areas in front of lovers point for squid, it’s usually a better bet later in the year than the aquarium/red can area. Anyways the rock formations straight out from coral street are loaded with rockfish, your fish finder will literally light up lol. 90-120fow is best but some quality blues and olives can also be found shallower. I’d use a 2oz p-line laser minnow and pop it every 10 ft down or so and if you’re over the fish it won’t make it down too far.  You can send some bigger swim baits or bars down for lings and verms but your best bet to catch some real chunkers would be to jig up some smelt or Mack’s and send them down on a 3way. There’s a picture of rock formations below too. And if you’re really feeling lucky and want to try for some halibut I’d try that yellow area in the picture below. Ive got quite a few fish over 40” there. Hope this helps

I looked up MPA website and found that Edward Ricketts SMCA is allowed for fin fishing. Did you went further west into the Lover’s Point SMR? I will keep checking the FishLegal app.

My son loves to eat squid so we will stick to the plan from CG pier to catch squid first. Not sure we can get to Lover’s point, may try the east of CG for rocks later.
