SWS 10/15/07 Monday

Launched after fantastic sunrise in calm conditions. Paddled out of the cove and trolled off the kelp and out to 200ft and picked up cookie cutter 17-18 " olives. A light breeze from the east picked up, lasted a couple hours, then it was calm for another couple -just a lake-,then the wind slowly built from the west, not ever strong.  I moved close into shore in an area I haven't seen anglers in and quickly picked up an 18" brown and a 22" bright orange ling.  Broken, building to full overcast day.  Came in at 2, easy. I had a hard take down on my homemade copper pipe trolling lure, a ling I think, because of the yo-yo runs.  Also got some good action on the rebar-filled copper pipe jig tipped with squid, also some on the glow-fringed diamond bar.  I didn't spend a lot of time jigging, paddled 9 (!) miles. Kept some fish for my sister.  Traffic north on Hwy 1 at 3-4pm was stop and go, I don't have that problem if I leave about 1-2pm.

I'd be interested in your 200' spot for the olives....did you mark it?

Way to get out there and catch fish with your own lures. That IS cool.
And you paddled 9 miles?! Man you covered some territory. Did you go all the way around to Cypress Pt?

Seriously!!!  Those of you who get to fish midweek owe it to the envious weekend warrior members of the chain gang to always post with pics...

I took a couple pics of the sunrise and of the fish I kept, but they are film (old underwater camera), so wait a couple of days.  I think I have some in there from earlier in the summer.
  I think you could troll a wrench there and come up with something.  I think it's the action that gets them, I got a couple just cranking it straight up after a snag.  It's definitely snaggier than the S.C. Lighthouse area, but I only lost one lure (it had trebles)and a couple of wieghts. 
   If you're out there with me, I'll be happy to show you what secret spots I have.  It's interesting what you find if you paddle around and watch your FF depth, and think outside the usual spots.

Tom, I love that your copper pipes are catching fish! As for the kitchen sink, I suspect somewhere on your kayak amongst all the "stuff" you bring along there just might be one.
Anyway, thanks for the report! Walker and I have not been able to get out on the water since going to Limekiln and nor does it look good this weekend either. Too much fall sports/school.... although, I feel a "mental health" day coming up soon.

Tom, glad to hear you had a great Monday.  After seeing you in the SC Harbor Sunday, I went out and got virtually blown off the ocean.  Maybe it doesn't mean anything to the more experienced guys, but when I am taking white water waves over the side of the kayak, it is time to head in.  I hope to meet up with you again for another trip.

Kieth: I'd consider water over the side of my P15 serious, and it sure wouldn't be much fun. Over the bow as I'm paddling, that's so-so conditions.   I don't know about others, but any time I see whitecaps close by, I know it's time to head in.
 Unless we get a good day before Sunday, I'm busy until next Thursday.  Too bad, because the weather should be good early next week.
