Was thinking of upgrading to a Humminbird FF and was wondering if anyone has photos and directions on the scupper hole tranducer installation. I was also wondering which transducer do you buy (transome, trolling motor, shoot through hull). I was thinking of getting the quadrabeam trasducer.

Thanks! Scott  :smt006

I believe Scwafish messed around with the quad beam transducer and found it to be a pain in the ass. Check with him.
Isn't the scupper cut out is shaped to fit the standard transom mount transducer. It has a "D" shape with the round side facing forward. Humminbird makes a metal(expensive ,$400) and a plastic thru hull transducer($67),they have a threaded shaft for installation and work with most but not all FF's. The shape is a teardrop profile. Probably the easiest install if it fits yak and FF.

Hi Scott, The one I got for my Trident is the plastic thru hull XTH 20 P. Fit in the scupper hole and is held in with a plastic nut. Got it online at the Hummingbird site.  Dan

Dan -

Luckily you, Scwafish and PAL will all be on the Islander so we can talk more. The problem with Humminbird is the number of units and accessories is really over the top and it is a significant investment. Won't be buying it till next year.

Thanks! Scott

I purchased the Humminbird FF that came standard with a Transom Transducer. The instructions gave a number to call to exchange for a different style transducer, necessary for the kayak scupper hole. You will need a Through Hull type. I mailed Humminbird the transducer that came with the FF and they sent me the Through Hull Transducer. I believe I paid an additional $20.00. Very easy to install. See photos. Hope this helps out.

FYI-the thru scupper will only work in a trident or brand new-p-15.  If you can use it it is the sweetest way to go.  Otherwise the regular trans that comes with them is just fine for gooping inside.

IMHO the quadra beam is not compatible with yaks and overly complicated.  It requires the installation of a second transducer and a toggle switch to go back and forth between transducers.  Finally, in talking with Humminbird, the angle of propagation for the ultra-wide unit wont work with a thru hull, so it mush be mounted outside, like on the stren.

That said, Humminbird IS making great stuff these days.  Get yourself one with a built in chartplotter and a dual beam trans and you WILL catch more fish.

I Bought my P-15 in March of 2007 and it apprars to have an enlarged scupper hole in the starboard tankwell for a transducer. Seems like a funny place to put the transducer but the cockpit drains a little slow so I wouldn't want to plug one of the forward scupper holes anyway. I will talk to you on the Islander over a beer on some other questions.

Scott - here's what I did with mine.....this was a rush job for me. I got the new P15 just before BAM III and I was eager to move the Hum 383c that I had on my Trident to the new Tequila Sunrise P15. So, the Thursday night before BAM, I drilled the holes, gooped and sealed the FF and the 2 flushmount rod holders on the stearn within 45min....it was around 1AM when all was said and done  :smt002

But I still think Ben's set-up is much "cleaner" than what I did with mine.

Hi Scott,

Sorry for the delayed response. I just got back from a hunting trip in North Dakota. I have the Humminbird 525. It has 240 vertical pixels and a 20 degree single beam. Mounting the transducer in the scupper allows water temps. I like the FF and would recommend it. It does everything I want it to and doesn't cost a fortune. I have not had any problems.

Good luck
Ben

Just might work for the Xfactor too. The bottom of the Xfactor has these deep channels where the scuppers are and the transducer may fit. It would be protected since it's inside the channel. As long as there's no issues w/ the transducer working properly w/plastic around it. Anyone tried that yet?

BTW. is everyone putting the trans in the back Just so the cockpit will drain faster or are there other reasons?
