i take my squid and put it in a tuppreware container and squirt in a dose of herring or sardine oil. I've noticed for shark or bat ray it makes a big difference

After a tough day of fishing the Gualala for steelies no one was having any luck. Both bait fishermen and fly fishermen were looking at the fish and neither were having any success. Everything was tossed at them.
All of the sudden a steelie busts the surface to nail, of all things, a cigarette butt!

Too bad nobody had this fly handy..  :smt003

Last year I was Steelie fishing the Smith. Not a good year for steel and most boats were getting 1 or 2 per day.
Same roe, same colored fish pill on most boats but mine. The difference was Mike's shrimp oil and that, I think, resulted in a 5 fish day.
The fishing was so good I thought I was there yesterday!

I saw a video years ago called "Salmon Spectacular". In it the guys were using underwater cameras and downriggers to show the virtues of ultra clean baits. So they left some baits in their bilge water to collect scent, then loaded two downriggers. One with the clean bait and the other with the bilge water bait. Several salmon showed up on camera and first went to the clean bait. After several seconds of refusal they all ZOOMED over to the dirty bait and proceeded to ATTACK it furiously.
So the experiment was done several more times, each with the same results.
I think scents work. period. Some Washington waters are closed to the use of scents. Have you never used WD-40 on your anchovies?
Try it, you'll like it.
Hope that's still legal!

So residual amounts of sunscreen or nicotene on my fingers will turn fish away, but they like wd40 and bilgewater?

Don't think it is.  I've heard through word of mouth that it wasn't but I never checked the regs so I really don't know.

I think on actively feeding fish it doesn't make much difference.
But if they are not feeding it can stimulate them to turn on.

I'm with Mike on this one.

I agree also I've fished bass tourn. next to guys using scent they hooked up when I wasn't . As soon as I did fish on.

Cod liver oil is cheap and super fishy smell. Sticks to your fingers and makes paddling slippery , so handle with care. Sometimes it shows up oil spill rainbows  from 30' even after five minutes in water. I figure scent is great if it leaves a trail in the water that a fish could follow  from 20' behind if trolling or similar.

I think it's fair to say it can't hurt, but I've yet to personally experience a "turn on" when I've tried it. I've only tried it after I was in a slow bite. For me the slow bite still continued......
