SWS 10/13

Met up with sackyak, john, and Jim and went out in what for SW was large surf, mostly a minor shore dump, but different than the usual lake launch.  Met up with bajareefer on the water.  I love the seat baja, it looked so comfortable I was envious!

fishing was slow, and as we stil had two on the beach, sackyak scouted out ahead and I stayed medium distance till we all grouped back up.  I saw a few fish jumping so cast out a small swimbait which was nailed by a small olive.  Each cast was an olive, all the exact same size.  Let it sink a bit deeper, and was rewarded with larger olives.  About then, sackyak gives a yell that he doing well on larger olives.  At the same time, the group on the beach is coming in, so I head out to where sackyak is and it is hot for a while.  The bite seemed to end as fast as it started and after that I couldnt buy a bite.  Ill let the others tell their tales.

Had to get home to prepare for the Monty Festival, an Aptos area fundraiser for the local schools that features a half hour long fireworks show on the beach better than any others I have seen.  Started the day on the water, ended with spectacular fireworks.

 Good to meet you guys!
 That was a hot 1 hour wasn't it?
 It was so good we took it for granted and let good fish go. On light tackle it was a blast....but when it stopped, it really stopped on cue.
 I stayed til 4 and the bite on blues turned back on ...but nothing else. I ended up keeping some smaller fish then I let go earlier.
 Several of us got ling-lings and Sacyak took some photos.
 The swell was fun and the visability underwater was great!

PS. My teakwood-ghetto seatback is the stoutest one on the water is it not?

I also fished Stillwater with two other friends on our yellow prowlers on Saturday. I might have met some of you in the water when you were heading in. We launched at 9am and headed to deep water for some sanddabs. But instead we found mackerel in about 75 to 100 ft. Most of them are about 10" with 2 biggest ones went up to 17". Reeling in 3 to 4 mackerels from 100 ft is heavy lifting. At one time, our anxiety level rose when we saw a few dorsal fins coming within 40 ft behind my friend. Then we were relieved to see that it was a group of whales/dolphins (about 12 ft long each) swimming by leisurely. Later we switched to fish for rockcod along the kelp, only got small to medium Olives, blues, kelp and gopher. I got most of my fish trolling a bare hook with squid stripe on a sliding sinker.

catching mack on light tackle is a blast!  Never fished for dabs out there, do you just go south of the pinnacles?

In the past, I had got good number of small sanddab straight out from the launch in 160 ft of water. But we only got a few tiny ones last Saturday. Instead we saw bait ball in middle or low column of 120 ft of water, that's where we got our mackerel.

I've caught a lot of big sanddabs south of Stillwater, towards Carmel River SB.
