I'm using a downrigger now, but would like to try without one. Would be interested in purchasing a used reel with a line counter, if anyone is thinking of upgrading.

I started using line counter reels almost exclusively a few years ago.  When they work, it's helpful.  Beware!  They stop working, and it turns into a trap...  I call them "lyin' counters" at that point.

They may do better in fresh water, but in the salt every line counter has failed so far.

You may not like the feel of leadcore line, if you choose to go that way. Kind of like fullsink line while flyfishing. Heavy and a bit clunky. IMO.

my new name should be Ostridge. Got my head in the sand. Going fishing and letting go of the other stuff I can't control anyway!

I really like my Abu Garcia Max Low Profile DLC for kokanee fishing.  See some right hands on Amazon for 100$

Oh man, that was exactly what I thought would happen if I used those discs, ker-plunk!  Sorry Ron!

I have a few Okuma Convector baitcasters & spinning reels. I’ve been looking at this line counter as an option for trout/kokanee trolling. https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B07Z6F86DS/ref=ox_sc_saved_title_3?psc=1&th=1

Yeah, the Abu Garcia DLC is looking like my best bet for new. Might just have to give myself an early Christmas present...

It's really cool actually.  I like the warning beeps when I reel in my line letting me know i'm almost done reeling in.  It also has a neat feature that you can pay line out with the button depressed and let go and it automatically engages the drag instead of having to turn the handle.  This helped me catch a fish one time while paying out line.
