Back in July, PolePole and SCAllen, along with Howard McKim and Chris Mautino went on a successful, epic hunt for Salmon shark out of Valdez.  Their story is captured mostly in this NCKA post:
http://www.norcalkayakanglers.com/index.php/topic,9236.0.html
and in this Anchorage Daily News article:
http://www.adn.com/outdoors/fishing/story/9195702p-9112127c.html

The post and article are dated late July / early August.

Just recently (Oct. 8 ), the UK's Daily Mail picked up the story...
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/pages/live/articles/news/worldnews.html?in_article_id=486386&in_page_id=1811

and subsequently, the story spreads to a number of sites and blogs.  Here's a few...
http://digg.com/other_sports/Hunting_for_Sharks_on_a_Kayak
http://www.neatorama.com/2007/10/09/extreme-fishing-hunting-for-sharks-on-a-kayak/

http://tastybooze.com/2007/10/fish-for-sharks-in-a-kayak-brilliant/
http://frostfirezoo.com/shark-fishing-on-kayaks

Curious what sparked the resurgence of the news (how'd it get picked up by the Daily Mail so late?), and it certainly serves as a reminder that nothing ever dies on the internet...

Entertaining reading the comments as well, mostly negative.

LOL, Dave you made my morning, I was rolling when I read some of those comments.

Look at the idiotic grin on the faces of those silly paddling butchers. I can't believe we still allow such sport killing in this world.

Jonathon Warren, I'm sure this man has consumed a steak or a piece of chicken at one point during his life making him a member the high horse hypocrite crowd.  Vegans kill me also, I wonder how they think their vegetables get fertilized, perhaps native wild cows do walk around crapping in mass on farms but I doubt it.

What’s so neat about someone killing a wild animal? Would this be neat if he killed a walrus, dolphin or a bear?

Please post pics of any walrus hunts guys, better yet, can I join in on one?  PS please don't kill dolphins, we need them to help us fight the GWS.

Very stupid and pointless. What a waste of a sharks life just so this moron can get his jollies. He should slit his wrists and fish for sharks while swimming in the nude.

As evidenced by the opening scenes in JAWS this tactic works equally as well if you don't slit your wrists, plus if you get skunked you can try again the next day.

i thought salmon sharks were those hairy chested dudes who hang around till last call trying to close the deal with whatever muffin top is still at the bar

This was just awesome  :smt044

do your research before commenting folks. salmon sharks are actually quite plentiful. If it were a great white or a mako, different story. this is no different than eating that salmon fillet you just had for dinner. I mean, we’re all hypocrites, but just try to limit how much of a hypocrite you are.

While I don't agree with the mako or gws statement at least this guy is somewhat rational.

I see this kind of like the “big truck, little d**k” syndrome.

As an owner of a big truck I personally took offense to this, I only have a big truck so I can tow around my big boat :smt002  My first car was a suzuki hatchback that could probably fit in the bed of my current vehicle.

If I had $1 for every "hater" that has commented on this ... well, let's just say that we'd have an NCKA clubhouse by now.  And if I had a $1 for every "lover" that has commented on this, we'd have an NWKA clubhouse as well.   :smt004

Every now and then I get drawn into a forum to comment.  I usually just let it fly by until I get a personal invite to comment.  Too many people that have no clue what went on.  Too many people jumping on the bandwagon.  I'm finding it more and more entertaining.

I JUST SUBMITTED THIS TO THE DAILY MAIL;

"Virtually the entire world population causes fish and marinelife to be taken for food.
Virtually the entire world causes fish and marinelife to decline to subsidize their own lives.
Some people fish for themselves directly and honestly and cut out the middleman.
Others have commercial industry do it for them out of sight and try and claim some kind of moral superiority.
 How hypocritical,cowardly and pathetic. "

And I bet most of those vegan fish huggers are wearing leather shoes & belts.  "See these teeth?  They are meant for ripping flesh into smaller pieces that can then be ground up & dropped into my belly"

Animals make CO2 thus contributing to their global warming theories.  Kill & eat the animals & help out the planet!

...Actually, as a true environmentalist I was about to suggest that one could kill and compost themselves in apology for all the oil and steel, chemicals and rubber, rainforest and trees it took to get them this far!
Selecting out a charasmatic creature or two to care about from the thousands we affect by virtue of our very, consumptive, existance is environmentally dishonest , token and trivial.

A real environmental patriot will kill himself the moment he relizes what a burden he has been on this wonderful planet

Vegans can be good. Especially with a dash of sauce and a little white wine... :smt005

Seriously though, one of my my daughters-in-law is a vegan, but she never preaches, which makes all the difference.  To each their own.
