Carmel 10/7

Me and jeffucsb launched around 9:15am and paddled out past the new Pt Lobos SMR. One of my favorite spots is about 100yds legal. But out drift was carrying us towards the boundary so we decided to paddle out towards the point.

I stopped to drift a whole squid for halibut in a couple places along the way to the point. Found a few isolated schools of fish straight out from the Meadows but no halis.

Continued out to the point and the wind picked up big time. We tied to the kelp and potholed for an hour or so. Fun but you don't tend to catch bigguns. Then the wind died down and we paddled due east from the point to search for schools/reefs. Found a few.

The wind came back up around 1 so we rode it back to the launch, catching a few more fish here and there. I trolled for salmon just for $hit$ and giggles. No love, except for a big olive. 

Final tally was about 15-20 fish each. But most of the fish were mysteriously small. Jeff kept a couple big blues, a fat starry, and some sanddabs. I lost a barely-legal-looking ling at the boat while unhooking a medium vermy from the shrimpfly above my jig. Oh well, I probably would've released it anyways.

Iron seemed to work better than plastic. The 3.25oz Krocadile was money. Jeff lost my lucky one though D'OH! Its alright. I'll buy more.
The 3.5oz megabait in sardineish color worked good too. I tried a couple different types of plastic: scampi, curly-tail grub, swimbait, and squid. None of them worked very well. But of those, the 6" Kalins Magumbo grub in glow color worked best. The water wasn't very clear (worst vis all year) so maybe thats why the glow worked so well.

Saw a couple other yaks out there. One was a tandem that launched from the point. They were fishing but I never got close enough to say Hi. Also saw another person but they might not have been fishing. Looked like he/she was paddling back towards Stillwater when I saw em. Hope they made it back OK. The wind was ripping in the afternoon.

WX looked perfect today. Too bad I was stuck at work! And there's supposed to be a storm heading my way. So who knows the next time I might get to fish the big blue. Hopefully not too long!

Thanks for the report PK. Sounds like I shoulda joined you. I just couldn't get my a$$ outta bed early enough to make the drive. Maybe next time. No fishing for me next weekend though. My friends are getting married. I'm guessing with the low pressure system coming through later in the week is gonna ruin fishing next weekend anyhow.

Yes, just a little south of the rivermouth. You could probably catch 100 of em if you wanted, it was hard to keep em off. Sometimes they'd just hold onto the piece of squid dangling from my jig until they hit the surface (hook was too big for theri mouth).
