Just back from 5 day recon trip up HWY 1 with my wife.  Combined birthday/anniversary trip so no poles allowed as wife wanted undivided attention.  Started at Muir Beach and then made stops at Gualala, Albion, Noyo, Anchor Bay, Shelter Cove, mouth of the Eel River, and Trinidad. Finished up at Mendo cuz wanted to see water level.  Here are some pics of the more interesting launch sites and Mendo for those interested.  Was interesting seeing firsthand the places Eric/Abking posts about.  Only place we didn't make it to was Cape Mendocino.

Awesome pics of Shelter cove.
It was the nirvana of my youth ...ie fishing there.
Anyone up for a gasoline sharing trip up there ASAP w/ our 2 kayaks on top?

Cool pics, Marmite!
Thanks for sharing. I especially like the pics of halibut at the cleaning station at The Cove. And those look like CA halibut, as opposed to Pacifics. So they were possibly caught nearby. Hmmmm. Abking, don't you still need a halibut for AOTY?

Great pics. Way to appease the wife and do some recon at the same time. Mendo looks crazy low. BAM should be awesome with on PB on the lake.

I'm not sure on the ID, but the next day I was talking with a guy cleaning a lot of reds and he seemed very knowledgable.  I was wondering if the halibut might be plentiful because of the long beach south of the cove.  But he said you really have to get out deeper because the halibut they tended to get were the Pacific that were usually in deeper water.  He seemed to think the cove area itself was pretty fished out except for the usual blues/blacks.  He said the hali caught the day before (probably the one in the picture--which I think was over 40") was from Punta Gorda, quite a ways to the north of the cove.

Shelter Cove is nice but you gotta give it up to Trinidad for the beauty. I kayak out of there 2-3 days a week. We Saw a pod of humpbacks last weekend. Give Humboats a call when coming through town we specialize in WAF kayak tours of the area. NCKA discounts

No worries for Mendo. It was way lower in 2001. The old riverbed is still 60+ feet deep. BAM III will be good times! Too bad rock fish closes tomorrow! Looks like some nice launches, especially Shelter Cove. There's always next year!

CHEERS!

P.S.  Happy anniversary!
