This is such bs, hope they get enough pressure to reverse this decision. Watch it will be same regs next year except halibut will he closed as well. The mismanagement of this state at all levels is overwhelming.

This is a ridiculous decision that will affect so many businesses economically. They are basing it on the stocks of one species that nobody targets, all while never requiring descending devices as other states do.

I would like more transparency on the decision making.  Who paid for what research, who donates to which politicians, and which of those politicians have a say on these decisions.

The environmental types that inhabit our governing bodies aren't going to sit around doing nothing even when fish stocks are perfectly fine. They are career people and need to rack up "accomplishments" this year, next year, and every year forever. If you haven't caught on, leftist governance of Cali is very performative. Public, visible displays are the name of the game, whether they are helpful or not. And the voters in this state are all too eager to glom on to any cause, narrative, or hysteria that's put in front of them. The more publicly something affects people without really making a difference, the better. None of it is new, and it's amazing watching the cycle play out over and over.

“How does one man assert his power over another, Winston?“

Winston thought. “By making him suffer”, he said.

“Exactly. By making him suffer. Obedience is not enough. Unless he is suffering, how can you be sure that he is obeying your will and not his own?"

I had started a list of businesses affected by the reduced season already. This closure makes it much worse.
Feel free to post other businesses affected by this that I can add to the list.

We did know this could be a possibility two years ago.  When they lower the bag limit on a fish and tell us it’s being overfished, you shouldn’t keep those fish or post on social media.  I was saying this about coppers and quillbacks then.  Too many anglers go rockfishing for limits.  Our Rockfish limit should be reduced to 5-7 including lingcod.  10 rockfish and 2 lingcod is not necessary.  I’m not convinced by CADFW’s shady broken management of our fisheries.  Their numbers seem to just come out of nowhere.  I’ll be happy if we get salmon back next year and more pacific halibut quota.  Personally, I wouldn’t be that upset if nearshore was closed again.  If I really felt like I needed some lingcod or rockfish, I would just catch em from shore off the rocks like I used to before owning kayaks or boats.  Big lings are fun to catch from shore anyways.  The loss of business in small towns and the effects on local economies is not good though.

Here are my "whereases"

Whereas:

1. The reduced rockfish season is further effectively reduced by weather conditions for non-motorized vessels, which cannot safely go out in windy conditions or large swell.

2. The opening of deep water rockfish beyond the 50 fathom line is not accessible to non-motorized vessels.

3. Non-motorized vessels are an environmentally friendly alternative to motorized vessels and should be encouraged.

4. Shore based anglers and divers are allowed year-round access to inshore rockfish.

5. Most rockfish stocks remain abundant.

6. The season has remained open in the past with limits of zero for depleted species stock.

7. Quillback Rockfish are not typically targeted or desired by anglers.

8. Oregon and Washington have longer near-shore seasons but require descending devices.

9. Many businesses including campgrounds, bait shops, local stores and retailers have already been severely affected by the reduces season.

10. Kayak and non-motorized vessels are more affordable to lower income fishermen than motorized vessels.

11. Limiting the season severely for non-motorized vessels will encourage non-motorized fishermen to launch in marginal, unsafe conditions if they cannot reschedule for a better week or month.

12. RIP Rittenburg Bank

13. Powerboats are going to burn a shit-ton more fuel motoring out to the deepwater reefs.

Not that it all do anything but we should all call in and respectfully voice our opinions. Especially why non motorized vessels should be ale to fish.
