Had a few days off from work, so I decided to head to Silver Lake.

Left Santa Cruz around 0415 on 7/6 and arrived at Silver Lake around 0830, on the water by 0900. Fishing was slow, picked up a mac near the creek inlet on a black spinner w/bucktail and had a few more hits that didn’t stick. Talked with a few guys who were doing great using ned rigs. Was off the water around 1300. Grabbed an open spot in the campground and went for a hike to see if any morels had popped up. None found…

Ran into the guys I had meet on the water and they gave me a sample of the ned rig they were using. (Thank you!)

7/7 was in the water at 0600, within minutes I had a nice brown landed, then another. Both on the same black spinner that was working the day before. After a loop around the lake it was time to try the ned rig. Wow! I was catching a mac about every 4 cast for two hours until the wind came up and I couldn’t stay over my spot long enough. Packed up and was back in SC by 1830.

Great trip, I’ll be back in a few weeks. Water temperature was right around 60 degrees and still a little snow around on north facing aspect with shade.

Thanks for the report - sounds like a great time. Last time I went by Silver and Caples (late May?) it looked like the middle of winter still.

Never heard of a ned rig before - what color was working for you (if you don't mind saying!).

Thanks!

Snow on the ground?   We were scheduled for Twin Lakes campground at Mammoth next week, but canceled because snow has campground closed.   Looking for alternative.  Campground good?   What bait on the Ned Rig?
