As a person w/a motor and a sail, I would use neither when participating in a kayak tournament. It doesn't stop me from showing up and using both -- just as a non participant on the official score card.

Seems that a thoughtful person/director could develop a set of disabled rules. My brother is a disabled veteran with stamina issues. He has a Power yak,he isn't allowed to compete in the biggest tournament at a place where he's fished over 30 years. He is self sufficient ,could self rescue no problems, probably has more saltwater experience than the vast majority of the participants. But "sorry, thanks for your service but you can't play" , why not just ask for Proof? Why exclude a portion of the community? If speed is an issue impose a Iimit,if range is an issue, impose a limit. If it's just for fun and prizes are "token" then why the Exclusion? If you can prove a disability that's not taking advantage. Seems wrong my brother got sprayed with agent orange protecting this country and the effects let him be further screwed by purists who think their way is the only proper way. I hope as others here have said minds can be opened to allow all to join the contest.

Admin/Mods if I'm over the line delete this post and give me a time out if you need to, but this post pisses me off.

As a Veteran with a service induced disability it really pisses me off when some assclown tries to hide behind "Veteran status" and says something as ignorant as "sorry, thanks for your service but you can't play". What the fuck does anyone owe your brother, or me, or any other Veteran that served; other than what was promised by the US Government? I have seen a lot of money and time given freely by members here to HOW (A Veteran Charity)  and PIF. I've only been a member here for just under a year, but in that time I've seen tournament winner hand the money he just won to someone that was in a bad situation. I watched as a kayak that was just won in a raffle was immediately auctioned off with the money going to someone in need. Just read the Stephkillsit thread and see the outpouring of love and money to help her family. Tell me what other fishing forum does these things?

Come out and fish at any meetup, tournament or gathering. What you will find is a bunch of assholes that will welcome you with open arms, open their hearts, feed you, and make sure when you are out on the water you're okay.

Each Tournament Director sets the rules for their tournament. Don't like it? Too bad don't participate, or start your own.

End Rant.

I received an email with the message and tone of the guy who wrote this post and is no longer on the forum.  I answered him that no one's stopping him from doing anything other than winning a tournament that has basically trivial prizes.  He came back with how I was discriminating...

That was a first, but it made me think about the issue.  I should've told him about HOW, but I'm sure he knows, and he had me on the defensive - it wasn't cool.

If you're reading this, GhostPointBob, I want you to think about how bringing a negative energy along with your message really kills the correspondence right up front.  As it was, you went away after two brief emails where I was put off but tried hard to just respond cordially.  To come at me with what felt hostile meant that we didn't even get to have a real discussion.  Now I see you were here with your message too, and I'm proud of a few clubmates for providing very thoughtful and genuine feedback.

Bushy nailed it.

I want one of those jet jobs! Nobody would ban me from their tourament! I cant catch fish first and foremost, unless I got to shock the lake right before the tourney or something, but because I would be a visual destraction to those less serious about competing. Only directors that no matter what, their feet swing when they poop, would say no, MontanaN8, you cant.
