Snakecharmer - Do you fish braid or mono?

I only ask because the 7' ML Trevala feels like a limp noodle when you fish it with mono. With braid, it fishes great.

I figured that would be the defining question. Two of my reels have braid because I bought them used with the braid already installed (from NCKA'ers!).  Everything else has mono.

I learned with mono. But I am not dedicated to it. Braid seems like it has plenty of advantages, so I am exploring it.  I fear no knot, and I always have an uber-sharp blade on hand, so why not try it?  Especially when jigging heavy weights in deep water, it seems like it may be a better choice.

The whole reason I started looking into a better jigging rod was dropping 3oz down 120 feet to target macks.  Then I realized that the same physics would be at play when fishing offshore for ling, rockfish, and halibut.  I've caught more trout than I can remember (mostly on a fly rod), but I am a total noob with techniques like jigging, and even more of a noob with saltwater fishing.

Fish laugh when I paddle by.  Sometimes they laugh so hard they fall on my hook.

Right on. For saltwater, I mostly fish 20-30 lb test P-Line CXX. BUT, I also love catching rockfish and lingcod on that 7' ML using braided line. The Trevala just does not work well with mono at all, but it really shines with braid.

One piece for sure.  And, while it will work, I rarely use braid for halibut, unless it's an uber-soft rod.  Those head shakes can be like a hammer hitting your rod.  RF and lings, with swimbaits etc, nothing better!!

Using a medium or light Trevala with mono is like humping with 2 condoms on...might be getting some action, but can't feel a damn thing.

Man... So between my version and Cen Coast's, it's like you're humping with a limp noodle and two condoms on.

Yikes... Just don't do it.

I always wondered why any thread that is more than 2 pages long ceases to have any relevance to the original questions.

Now I know why.

And, thanks for the clear message on braid vs mono.

How do you even get two condoms on a limp noodle?
