Just because there weren't any scrapes, doesn't rule out GWS.
Go look at video footage of GWS breaching on seals or the seal-silhouettes towed behind boats...it appears as if the shark misses the target 10-30% of the time...and simply tosses the seal into the air, disorienting it. They aren't the smartest animals.
I bet it was a white shark that either: A) aborted the polaris attack or B) wanted to toss the object in the air to figure out what it was.

I'm now 100% convinced that it was a sea lion, because some jackass on the internet is so sure of it.
