Congrats on the new yak. What did you get? If you're new to kayaking, I would suggest hitting your local lakes and reservoirs first. MBK also provides safety class I believe. And keep an eye out for hookups. They're great for meeting fellow yakers

Welcome to NCKA Clark  :smt006  Wetsuit or dry suit is highly recommended if you plan to salt water yak fishing.  Taking classes or learning self rescue in controlled environment will boost your confidence.

Right now is kind of the offseason for ocean fishing...you can only fish for sanddabs, perch, etc (no rockfish/lings/cabs/salmon). So you won't see as many people posting open Hookups.

I would suggest getting a 3mil farmer john wetsuit and a paddling top (and neoprene booties to keep your feet warm). You may also want to consider getting paddling pants. I call it the "poorman's drysuit" when you wear a wetsuit with a spray top & pants. This setup is also more versatile than a drysuit because you can choose to 'just' wear the pants or top if you're fishing freshwater (without the wetsuit) etc.
Coyote Lake just opened to boats on Monday (SHHH don't tell anybody though!). That is an excellent place to practice paddling because the water tends to be warm. That way, you can test the stability and limits of the kayak...at which point will it tip over; how to retrieve items from the tankwell safely; or how to access the bow hatch. Not to mention, climbing back on your kayak!
A good place to practice in the ocean is the beach behind Monterey Bay Kayaks in Monterey because it is generally calm, safe, and shallow.

I hate buying things like wetsuits online (without trying them on first), but Sierra Trading Post has some good deals...extra 40% off today with code ZUY6515M. They also have paddle jackets & pants.

While I can't necessarily show you the "right way" to do it. I CAN show you how I do it. There is a small get together at the O'Neill Forebay next wknd. Lots of guys will be there, so it w/b a good opportunity to see how people rig their yaks and chat about kayak basics. And catch some stripers too!
