Adventure sports and Clavey Paddlesports have Ocean Kayak Trident 15's on sale. They are 15'7.5"

You'd be fine fishing a 13 footer, but don't let the convenience factor limit your decision. You can car top a 16' yak just as easily as a 13, maybe even easier because the length gives a less severe angle as you tilt it up onto the racks.

+1

I have a Hobie Adventure (16', and heavy) that I cartop on my CRV, and I'm a weakling. It's a piece of cake as long as I can get access from either side.

The problem is that I have a truck with 4 lights on top. So the yak either has to go in the bed or on a trailer. Not much room in my yard for a trailer. I could get a bed extender. So I'm trying to balance between length, convenience and space(trailer)

Dude I have the same truck and for about 3yrs, I just transported it in the bed no problem. I would either drop the tailgate and strap it down right-side up. Or leave the tailgate up and strap it down upside-down. The key is to put it in stern first, so the bow is hanging off the back...and tie down the stern really well. Just don't forget to hang a flag and/or a small battery-operated red led light.

Hack the lights off & be done with it.

Right now I put the tailgate down and put the stern in first with my predator 13. Then I tie a red bath towel to the bow.

The extra 2' doesn't make it want to fall off the back?

I use those lights. Some of my camping spots require a little 4 wheeling and I may not get up there until 9:00 or 10:00 at night.

It's all about strapping down the stern. Here's what I use. If you have a bedliner it m/b harder to access, but I just cut slits in my bed mat. Second pic is under the mat.
