I like the bringing more stuff idea. I am not good at trying to only take certain lures.. I want them all! lol
To float your rod and reel do you just zip tie a pool noodle to your rod?

I keep two trays in a plano orange box behind my seat. One is for live bait/bait the other more traditional rockfish gear. In a dry bag in my hatch I carry gear for salmon, sabiki, and other long shot items. I do not have floats on my rods, but usually have them leashed except for the one I am actively fishing with.

I think a lot depends on target species also.  For rockfish, less is more.  For bass, more is less.  I believe MOST people for saltwater tend to end up at the less is more approach to fishing.  For freshwater, sometimes it does take a larger lure selection for bass but not always.  Most bodies of water will have a tried & true collection of lures that will be most effective.  I used to carry everything but the kitchen sink with me.  Now, when I do get a chance to go, i carry only what will fit in a very small plano tackle tray and the few staples I keep in the Hobie round box in the yak.

Tote a few years back, had the idea to cut a diagonal circular cut through a pool noodle.  I find they work well.

I'll try a diagonal cut. For rock fish and lings I just use swim baits, and some dropper loop rigs with squid. But for bass I will throw most kinds of lures. I think I will keep an empty box or two and when I go somewhere I will put everything in it that I think will do the trick.
