Scotty #349 Rodmaster II vs Powerlock - need wider rod holder!

It sounds like you have the standard Scotty baitcaster rod holders (second in that pic above). I used to have those too. Couldn't fit the butt cap on most ocean rods in there. Not I have the regular Powerlocks and they are big enough to fit larger butt caps. And Yes, the Scotty post & base are interchangeable (same size for all Scotty products).

I use a "modified" Power-Lock rod holder. I basically removed the rotating ring thingy from the front and widened the opening with a rasp and some sandpaper....

Still not ideal, but this made pulling out a fat-butted Tiger rod MUCH quicker and easier.

I wish they would have just made it fatter to begin with...

Try out the rocket launcher style. 

For trolling, I like to have to rod holder on the right side with the rod crossing over my shins toward the left. This keeps the rod tip closer to the kayak, which makes for less lopsided drag and less neck strain watching the tip for nibbles. The rocket launcher wouldn't really work for this.

I use that one on my Scrambler XT, but haven't been that impressed with the holding power of the Ram ball compared to Scotty...
