For my Outback, the crate is still king to me. It serves as vertical rod storage, and a spot to mount my rod holders. I also enjoy using it to store all the items I need for fishing all in one spot.  Mine is not a milk crate, but rather a File Crate you can buy at Office Depot.  It just seemed to fit better than my other milk crates which I use for storing camping gear  :smt044
