She denied the most egregious allegations. Unless and until someone proves her wrong that will be good enough for me.

I think she openly admitted to testifying in favor of mpa's and actually asked for closures.   Thats not the most egregious?
One of the biggest insults throughout the process was continuously hearing that "we're only closing 10%" implying that fisherman could have the remaining 90% to do our thing.....unfortunately the 10% they want to close had 90% of the structure we fish in, somehow that fact never made it into any press releases or media outlets.
You can read the quotes below, its obvious she asked for smr's and she wanted them in the most productive spots.  Quote one...let the fisherman have the sand pits.  Quote 2, Green Sea Turtles....protect the area so people can learn and enjoy it in the future....very cute.  Quote 3, again, prime real estate lets close it.

Quote
I have never heard of a single person who dives in Del Mar & see no need
to place an MPA in the area MPA's should be set in areas high in
biodiversity & rich habitat structure (not sand pits)! SMR's should benefit
non-consumptive users as well as provide spill-over for everyone else.

This area, having the highest concentration of eelgrass in the county,
provides much needed habitat for a wide variety of organisms (not to
mention a great source of food for more charismatic creatures like the
green sea turtle) Many people do not even realize its importance & it
should definitely be protected so that others may learn about I enjoy it in the future!

Swamis incorporates both shallow & deep water habitats as well as a
great source of surf grass, making it a prime place to protect. Protecting
this area would also make the area much safer for the may surers who
frequent the area I would serve a greater purpose than the Del Mar SMR

Cheryl Barnes has also posted as "California Collaborative Fisheries Research Program" which has been studying the mpa's utilizing volunteer anglers on charter boat trips. Throughout the entire mlpa process, fisherman's opinion and desires were pretty much dismissed by the brtf. Now we're being asked to help gather data and point them to where the fish are at?

I'm well aware that the current halibut study has nothing to do with the mlpa but it was a defining point for me on where I stand with helping anyone with any scientific endeavors.  I believe that she has no agenda with this study and I'm sure she's a nice girl, but I'm not going to participate in screwing myself over in the future.

I have no doubt we'll react to this with more class and courteousness than was shown on spearboard.   :smt009

Thanks Allen!  and BigJim too!

I just saw this post.  Most everyone knows I've been involved in fighting, and feel burned by the corrupt MLPA process here in California.  Still, I feel as a fisherman it's important to retain my voice and my input into the greater research process.

If not me, then whom?  That's part of the reason I support this halibut project.  If I ever catch another flatty (if DC leaves any for me), I will turn the carcass over to Cheryl for study.

I do have my limits.  For instance, I will never deal to the stupid dockside fish measurers anymore.  What pests!  Unless you have a salmon, it's totally legal to blow them off.  And that's my intention after dealing with an arrogant, argumentative undergrad with a stud in her nose and an supercilious attitude the other day. It took me five minutes of banter with her before she'd admit that they have no authority whatsoever.

All I was suggesting was they approach anglers with a little courtesy and sensitivity, and it almost developed into a brouha-ha.  Geeze!  I mean, it's just stupid to pounce on a fishing boat that's been out for 8 hours as soon as they tie up, especially if the harbor is a madhouse, the ramp is full, and there's five boats in the channel waiting for space at the dock.  As soon as one of them was diverted, another would come up with the same intrusive approach.

Can't believe how clueless.  I'll talk to our local warden and see if he can tune them up down at SC Harbor.

But, IMHO, Cheryl is not one of those people.  I've met her, and like her, and will support her when I can, in this study at least. Everyone is entitled to their opinion but don't throw the baby out with the bathwater.

Fish studies, especially halibut about which little has been accomplished in our area, can work in our favor.  As an example, I submit the trawling ban instituted a few years ago.  Since those 4 or 5 commercial boats were disallowed from the deepwater ambush points near the MB Marine Canyon, sport halibut fishing has improved remarkably in our area (anecdotal experience, no idea what "official" counts might be).  The commercial hook and line guys are doing way better on flatties too, since then.  And I absolutely support those guys.

Even I manage to catch a few now and then.

So, have at it, and thanks for staying polite and courteous.

Your friend,

Allen

I'm with Art on this one.

I also believe that she is being honest in regards to her recent study and its intentions, BUT her previous actions leave a bad taste in my mouth and the fact that she has the audacity to come ask for help from the same people she's helped screw in the past is laughable.

I'd really like to bite my tongue here (I have been for awhile now) but my current thoughts on this matter (edited version) are go out and find your own damn halibut....and....don't come spamming fishing boards full of people you helped screw out of fishing grounds asking for help.

Have a nice day.

Congrats on your catch Cheryl!  http://capitolaboatandbait.com/2012/08/05/capitola-21-and-quarter

Didn't she just kill a shorty for a photo op?

She has a permit to take undersized halibut for her research....I would bet the photo op was Ed's idea cuz he is always trying to take pics of fish coming over the rail down there to put on the website.

Bury that halibut head under your garden and send Cheryl tomatoes.
As far as that other fish goes... :smt007 :smt007 :smt007
