I've abused the sh!t out of my 10ft Daiwa Sealine Surf rod. And I got it @ the local West Marine for like 35 bucks on clearance. Although, I use it mainly for shore rockfishing...not surf fishing for perch/stripers. Shore rockfishin pics: http://s449.photobucket.com/albums/qq217/Sin_Coast/Shore%20Rockfishing/

For surf fishing I use a lighter 9ft Lamiglas. Or even an 8ft St Croix if I'm not throwing big plugs for stripers.

I always used a medium action spinning rod 7'6". Most fish are right in the breaking surf. The log rods are for guys looking to cast a big bait a way out and wait for a passing shark to pick it up. Light tackle with a gulp camo sand work c-rigged is way more fun. I've cough perch, leopard sharks, halibut, corvina, and mackerel all in less then 6' of water.

bingo and if you time it right sand crabs for bait! A little kid sand toy strainer works perfect for collecting them.

I have had good luck with an shimano samurai surf stick, good caster.  I also have a 12' ugly stick, but it doesn't have the right action on it to really huck stuff out there.  But 50 bucks isn't much to work with.  When I first got back into surf fishing about ten years ago I went to Big 5 and bought a crappy diawa combo surf rod for about 50 bucks, and some weights, hooks, and surf leaders.  Went to limentour beach and after about 5 tries I finally got a couple of anchovies past the breakers.  Sat down and bamn, got myself a nice 28 inch striper.  My only one from the surf ever.  I don't think you can even fish there any more.
