Just step away from the ocean bluestar! It sounds like you have a lot of fears about entering the ocean and I believe it would be best to just not enter the water. Believe me there are sharks in the water and they will look for those who fear them the most. Do you analyze everything so much such as driving on certain highways? To be honest there is probably more danger in driving to the dive spot then getting attacked by a shark.  I understand your fears but just deal with it and dive in areas wear you'll feel safe( lake Tahoe is good). No more shark talk. It is starting to scare me :smt103

I forget where i heard that... maybe it was here, or maybe down at the harbor in SC.... But its a true statement, funny too.

I read it in Surfer.  Story was about the lesser antilles, kelly slater and crew paid a fisherman to drop them off at an offshore break.  On their way out one of the guys asks the fisherman if there's sharks there and he made them taste the water then gave them the salt line.

Dude,  THATS IT... YOUR RIGHT!!

Randy Fry got his head taken off while just before that the shark pushed Randys buddy out of the way to get to him. When the number comes up theres just not much to do about it. That was up past Ft Bragg. I have been diving Sonoma County for well over 30 years and have never seen one. Or any shark for that matter and probably wont. I saw one blue in my zodiac once.  Thats up north though and I really dont know anything about diving south of Marin Co. Good Luck and let us know how it was. PM Fuzz he will give you the straight scoop.

Hey Craig, YOU may have not seen 'em......but don't you think that in those 30 years of being in the ocean, at least one of 'em has checked you out  :smt002

...Just a thought :smt001

That site is inaccurate and outdated. Not to mention, a kid got chomped at Marina beach in 07 or 08 (I must be getting old lol) while surfing.
I bet the # of attacks is infinitesimal if you crunched the numbers to put a percentage on it. Probably like .0000001% chance. Consider how many people enter the water in this area....hundreds daily. So, for myself, the idea that there have only been 7 or 8 attacks is ironically comforting. If there were the same amount of people entering the water off the San Mateo coast...there w/b a lot more attacks.

Heck, I thought I saw one 2 Saturdays ago out in front of MBK. But the weirdest thing happened, instead of running/paddling away, I was drawn closer to investigate this animal. I felt no fear whatsoever. And I remember a story that Andy told when he felt the same thing upon seeing a shark from his yak. I initially thought Yeah Right! Then it happened to me, and it felt like a natural reaction. The result? I'm still alive and it wasn't even a white shark. But if it was, I woulda reacted the same way. Well, maybe next time I'll throw some topwater plugs at it.

I'm sure for some this is not comforting however 7 reported attacks in 60 years is some long long odds. I recall doing my adv. open water certification off the breakwater that weekend in Dec, when we heard that Lewis Boren board had been discovered with that huge chuck bitten out of it. After that news I heard the 'Jaws' theme and hyperventilated with every shadow outside the kelp beds that weekend.  :smt044

I am thinking as long as you don't go off and pull a Steve Irwin and tick off the "guppy," or slather yourself in A1 steak sauce as some sort of sun block....

Of course this thread got me to thinking about the orginal 1960's "Batman Movie."  Batman is attacked by a shark, and he asks Robin to reach into "Bat Utility Belt," and pull out the can of "Bat shark repellant." Of course he sprays this hair spray looking stuff and the shark instantly lets go.  So all you really need is your trusty well stocked "Bat Utility Belt!"
