Hi Tote, I havent figured out how to post the quotes on the reply yet. So here is what I do with the paint.

I jumped in feet first (as I do with most things I try) with this powder paint. Pouring lead is old hat, but throwing 10oz jigs without them getting too wrinkly was kind of tricky. I got a cute little air compressor and an airbrush they pimp out of the tackle making websites. Which is actually a neat little media blaster, not an air brush.

The powder paint is super fun to play with, easy to mix colors and apply either by dipping the item in the paint or use the airgun. The lures must be heated to 350deg. I bought a toaster oven for 4 bucks at a thrift store and that works fine. I use one of my flytying vises to hold the jig so I have both hands free. I have the air brush in one hand and a torch in the other (to keep the jig hot , they cool down fast with the air blowing on them from the gun), just dont burn the paint.

I set up a little paint booth with a shopvac for ventilation to keep the mess to a minimum. I want to set a funnel in the vacuum hose with a coffee filter to catch the extra paint. Waste not, want not. :smt002

The last step is to coat them in a two part clear doming compound to seal them and give them some depth. It will also keep the eyes from falling off.

Aside from the paint dust, it isnt too messy and it doesnt smell at all.

I will post some more pics soon.

Thanks Domenic. Can't wait to see some pics.

Those turned out great domenic!  I think that powder paint gun is the way to go on larger jigs.  I have been sprinkling it on with a paintbrush, but it labor intensive if you are doing very many.

I love the two tone colors you did!  I can't wait to see them in action at GMS III!  I have looked at several of the English molds, they really have a great look to them.

Nice work.  Have you used these jigs before.  They don't look like they would flutter much but I'm sure they do.  Just curious thanks.

Thank you, some of them have three colors on them but it is hard to keep the jig hot. I need to get at least two more guns and a manifold.

Hows the plastics coming? I would like to try some at GMSIII too.

No I havent, it is a european design. I would give them a bend in the middle to make them flutter but I plan on banging the bottom for Mrs. Lingzilla. So I am not worried too much about flutter, just to piss her off. :smt004

Not saying some extra action wouldnt hurt...

Extra action...

Could reversing the treble hook and line attachments change the action?
Maybe then the jig might "swim" down and across the bottom on the fall?

Those jigs do look very good - I bet you'll find some combination of attachments,
hooks, bends and colors the lings can't refuse to hit! Catching fish on lures you made yourself is always such a great feeling.

Good fishing! FB

I have just done one to two colors up to 8oz heads.  I used a propane torch.  The toaster oven worked better but my wife reclaimed it  :smt011  I do bring them inside after painting and bake them to smooth the surface and harden the paint.

Funny you should mention the plastic.  I just got done casting the last of my plastic and lead today.  The rain makes a good shop day.  I will post a thread on what I have been up to.  I have been out of town alot, so my crafts have slowed down.

Have you gotten any more molds yet?  I think you mentioned you had another one on order?  Pretty cool, something new for the fish to look at.

We will definately have to do some trading at GMS III, I want to try one of those!
