I finish my bowline and anchor system last night. I got a 5lb foldable anchor from west marine. Is the weight sufficient enough? do I need a back up anchor just in case it snag and I have to cut it off?
the 5lbr held me down o.k. (not alot of current) ,but when it's flowing hard, it will need some xtra like Don said.
...I'm gonna attatch a length of chain to it, adds weight and DIGS the front of the anchor down.
another "MUST" is to have over 70ft of rope to it(IMO) ...when i was in 35+fow and had 70ft of line= movement.   the chain/longer rope should prevent that from happening.
xtra anything is always better, sometimes, in certain situations, ithink?  :smt003

Keep pluggin' away, Adam. Twenty years of non-yak fishing only got me one decent-sized dino...unfortunately it was 6 inches over the limit. But what a blast to fight it on 14 pound test at Montezuma Slough.
14lb test!   i can't do that!   that would be a better accomplishment,then to land a LEGAL on cable!  and a'plugin i'm a'keepin'!   :smt010

Yo, what's up with all the noob talk??? :smt005 :smt005A 5lb folding anchor is all you really need.  Its all I use and I take a backup also.  A lesson I learned as a noob when I lost my anchor.  Thanks to tote for having a backup.  A real lesson learned that day.  Seriously, then also take 100 feet of rope and/or like I do 3 different lengths for different depths.  You should always have 3 times the length of rope for the depth your fishin.  20' depth=60' of rope in the water.  Another thing, if the current is rippin and you have your feet in the water, this will help to pull your anchor free also.

Ask many guys here who fish alot for sturgeon and striper in the winter on the bay.  The one thing that really sucks is when the wind is blowing across the flow of the tide.  This happens alot over the oakland channel.  jtf..

Hey Lino! Thanks~ did you see any BIG marks swimin below you along that ledge?

Yeah Adam, they were getting in my nerve...it's a little frustrating if you mark them (a lot of them) and they don't bite. But it was all good. Just like what I told Chuck..."I'd rather be out there than sitting on my couch".

5lbs. of anchor is plenty.  When a faulty knot (wtf was I thinking?) left my anchor stranded on the bottom of San Pabby last winter, John was cool enough to let me tie off to his kayak so I could still fish.  His anchor held true no problem.

Way to stick with it, Adam.  Hope you get a keeper before the years end.
