I'll be there Sat or Sun...  Can't break my streak...  specially with the season closing early.

Will the launch area near coral street or carmel bay be blown out also?

-Brian G
The Coral street area could get a little sketchy with this type of swell, rocks, and extreme tide swings-be careful dude. solsrf1

I think Bean should be pretty protected by the point and Ano Nuevo, what do you think John?

most likely, but I have surfed a couple big waves at pomponio in the past on a solid south. that is the same exposure. it depends how much west this swell ends up having in it.

in the morning, before you go, pull up the bouys page, http://www.lajollasurf.org/nocal.html then the pt reyes spectrum.
http://www.lajollasurf.org/ptreyes.html mouse over the frequency bands. Anything above 2 feet from a southerly direction and period over about 13 seconds will be noticable at south facing beachs. If it's 4+ feet from the south and 16 second period or longer, that means some whopper sneaker sets for anything with south facing exposure. this is rare. but it does happen.

Basically if there's a band over 2 feet in the summer I surf and leave the kayak at home.

There's a great chance that this thing does not show as early as saturday morning. but it might. just check the page!

If you are fishing out there and it comes up, sit outside the cove and wait for a set to pass. If it was me, I would do that anyway to see what is going on at the launch. then head in directly after a set. There's usually a big 15 to 20 minute gap between the sets of a south swell when it first shows. it might be counterintuitive, but you don't want to wait for a big lull then go. a set might overtake you. wait for a set. then go in directly after it.

I drove by Bean twice today and it was ankle slappers.  I was wishing I had a Yak and did not have to work.  I did see someone out there in a yellow boat at about 8:AM.  I hope it stays small.  I want to get a few more cracks at it before the closures all hit.

Now that is a simple breakdown of it John! I always wondered about the direction deg. of swells the reports.  Thanks for the lay-man interpretation.
is this one of them freak newzealander swells that may or may-not show?
I will be packing board too for sure!

definitely this swell is from a big storm in the southern hemisphere. is late winter there. those waves can be 40-80 feet tall when generated, they get way smaller as they spread out across the ocean, but they don't slow down at all. long period stays the same, just the size gets smaller.  so they look small out on the water, but they rear up and break hard when they feel the bottom.

this swell is forecast less than 3 feet tomorrow and barely over 3 feet sunday.

I'm still going to be surfing, but it's less of an obvious choice and the fishing should be better
with the smaller swell forecast.

flat as a lake out there right now, even way out. if it does show, it should be clean!

Here is the current NOAA forecast for Monterey Bay:
.SAT...LIGHT WINDS...BECOMING W 5 TO 10 KT IN THE AFTERNOON. WIND WAVES LESS THAN 2 FT. NW SWELL 1 TO 3 FT AT 10 SECONDS.

Uhhh...ya! The mixed swell is no longer a part of the equation inside the Bay. Which is GOOD because a S swell tends to put the fish down and shut off the bite.
This current forecast is more representative of what I saw on my drive to work this AM. Flat as a ... a... Kansas!
