Whew! That was a bit of a mess. Glad to see everyone is ok, Good thing the Coast Guard was so close. If that were up north I wonder if Salt Point has a rescue or if they would come from bodega bay? From the Coast Guard at Bodega Bay that could take an hour or so. I would imagine that Salt Point with all the abalone divers there would be rescue somewhere near by.

Glad it came out OK. The pics are upside down though. Was that part of the problem?

I tried to correct the photos a couple of times.  FU## it.
Glad it ended well. Man I remember getting blown at Monterey, I was barely making grounds. By the time I hit the shore, Herb was already snoring in his car. BTW I took the liberty to correct the pics.

Many thanks

glad you were able to make it back safe!  if the woman wasn't around to help, would you have called CG again, or make one last attempt?

i remember last PIF, i stayed out longer than i should and had to fight that nasty wind back to MBK!

I was out of options,  No shame in calling for help again.  The paddle snapping left me adrift.

happy to hear all are back home safely. quick question. did the CG send you a bill? curious because i know paramedic will send some crazy bills.

No bill.  The guys at Monterey Yacht Club help the Coast Guard with small emergencies like this.  It keeps their life exciting.

Glad everybody is safe!

I fixed front hatch leak using this fix http://www.hobiecat.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=69&t=46308  and tightened ropes (tested couple of times now, works nicely).
I was walking back from Chinatown and had the same thought.  I'm glad you posted.  Ill do that before my next trip.

What part broke exactly? The mast or just the fin?
What cause that?
So you can learn from it.

It broke the rod going the rough the fin.  This is the second one I have broken.

There is an alan wrench fitting at the top and you can loosen up, take out the broken piece, and insert the remaining bar for a quick fix.  I opted not to do that,
as the wind was really blowing us out.

This illustrates the risk, small risk, on depending on the Mirage Drive for propulsion. Mechanical devises do break at times. Sail power also had downfalls as Raydon described the event. A good paddle and a spare are the most sure way to make forward progress if one is in a kayak suitable for distance paddling. The A1 is not. If you were in just the Adventure hull, no outriggers, and the drive broke would you have paddled in OK under the conditions you described?

Myabe.  I am not willing to test it however.

Thanks for sharing the tale!

Did you call a MayDay or PonPon?

And... after my paddle mishap earlier this year, I tossed my collapsible paddle (useless) and now keep one of these in the hull as a backup:

Glad you made it safely   :smt006

good idea, Mark.

Glad you are OK Ray.
How did the sail unfurled?  The cleat didn't hold the small rope tight?

Not sure.  At the point that the sail came unfurled, I was exhausted and didn't have energy or brain power to trouble shoot anymore.

Good question.

I just connected to Channel 16, and calmly said,  Coast Guard can you read me.  My name is Raydon, I'm in a kayak and am south of MBK and have no power.  I need assistance.   They asked if I was in immediate peril, and did we have PFD.  I answered not in immediate peril and we did have PFD. Within  10 seconds, the first boat said they were on their way.  (they hugged the shoreline and missed me.)  I called again after five minutes and then the second boat showed up.

They have a personal water craft anchored at Gerstle Cove.

Ya I figured that about Salt Point. I have brought my fins sometime well this confirms it I will bring them all the time.
I and 4 others went out on a bad day in a zodiac below Fort Ross Reef there is a smaller little reef and of coarse the motor gives out strong wind blows us right into the reef big swell, boat flipped we bailed and ended up body surfing to shore I felt safer in the water than in the boat.
Only one injury motor conked Ben on the head but other than that all was good. The real bad was packing that boat, motor and all the gear up the cliffs.
Got to respect the Big Pond.....

A loop of 1/4" soft vinyl tubing (like you'd use in an aquarium) along the inside rim seems to do the trick too. And it's a lot more permanent than using that thick foam.
