Article in Santa Cruz Sentinel (from Monterey Herald) about "squid season a bust":
http://www.santacruzsentinel.com/business/20160511/monterey-bay-squid-season-basically-a-bust

An interesting bit in there about how some squid is caught here, frozen, shipped to Asia, processed, refrozen and shipped back.  I can't believe that's our bait squid, or it'd cost a hell of a lot more than it does!
We'll have to leave it up to Bushy to fill in the gaps in the story about what impact the shortage is having on recreational anglers.

I bet it's simply a matter of supply & demand, Tom.   Not enough squid to go around, so the wholesalers are asking more...

The wholesalers are asking more. I buy squid from wholesalers 25lb at a time, and our price has nearly doubled in the last year.

Exactly, and Safeway probably has some equation they run to determine if it's profitable...like, if it doesn't hit the 30% margin threshold, then they probably won't stock any.

Still haven't found any frozen stuff in stores around here, Asian stores or otherwise. But I did locate fresh ones for a hefty price. $4.99 per pound.

Last wsb season, I was buying all my fresh dead squid at whole foods on soquel. But I'd call first.

Is it organic?
I don't like stuff that sucks.
