Mud salmon? Nahhh. Lots of chromers with same meat a day or 2 out of the salt up here. Plus, the clapped out female salmon roe is the best sturgeon bait in the world in my opinion. Up north redding area is just now getting better. They do have to come through sac, but the water too warm for them to bite anything. The american is picking up bigtime and the guides are starting to drift roe. Perfect kayakin territory  :smt003. Thanks for all the reports n info!

A neighbor asked me to go on guide boat yesterday after last minute cancellation. Bite was a little tough, we got three fish and missed three, largest was 20 lbs.

Some of the fish being caught recently up above Red Bluff still had sea lice which means less then 36 hours since fish left ocean, not mud salmon. Plus fresh lamprey eel marks.

Using roe, talked with several boats that also had fish.

Guide we went with has been on river since 1978, he monitors water temp closely. If 59 degrees or warmer fish generally move right through until they find a deeper hole/cooler water. River yesterday was 59 -60 so all about timing, if you had your line out of water to change bait could miss them as they went by.

Lampreys can't latch onto salmon in the ocean; only once they enter an estuary/river (ok it's possible but like 99% chance those salmon got latched onto inside the delta or Sac). As soon as they start morphing and stop eating, their metabolism shuts down...and that's when they begin to taste like mud. In my opinion.
