Once upon a time in Mexico,  the claim was that triggerfish was the preferred fish for civiche.  I want to catch one here!
The pangeros were hand lining them on a rock pile right outside a preserve south of Punta Colorado.

I saw one in Capitola I believe in 2008.  Almost got it to hit my shrimp fly, but then disappeared into the kelp.  I've wanted to catch one since then!  :smt003

Trigger fish are bad ass!!

If you ever get one try and bend down its front dorsal fin...you wont be able to...they lock that thing in place so if they go into a crack to escape a predator they can lock their fin and the predator won't be able tp pull them out...

Quote
The name of the trigger fish is derived from how this fish defends itself. A trigger fish can raise the first two fin rays of its dorsal fin; the first ray will “lock” and the second one will “unlock”. As long as the fish is relaxed, the dorsal fin will be relaxed as well. If the fish feels threatened in any way, it will quickly disappear into a crack or crevice and raise its dorsal fin. The raised dorsal fin makes it very difficult for a predator to extract the trigger fish from its hiding place. A raise dorsal fin can also be helpful in cases where the fish doesn’t manage to find a crevice fast enough, since the raised fin makes the trigger fish unpleasant to swallow for predators.

I've caught a lot on hook and line but haven't speared one....yet.  :smt003

Jim
