from past experiences, most cheap grade stuff breaks at the wrong time.  if i can afford it, i try and buy quality stuff, but don't like shelling out $$$.  that's why i buy 2nd hand items, or discounted new.  CL, ebay, NCKA classifieds are the way too go!  i think i picked up my used calcutta for $100+ and trevala for < $100.

I have a 1972 Sabre California Tackle Co 7' fibreglass, and a Penn 500 (year unknown).  Best RF setup overall.

Yesterday I used a Lamiglas 8'6" Kenai Special with a Progear 525 , braid and a mono topshot for bait, and GLoomis 8'6" spinning rod  with a Penn Slammer 460, 15# mono direct tie to the swim bait.  Longer lighter rods= more fun esp with the bigger fish.  Real light drag just in case Ms. halibut takes a bite.

Just ordered a used Shimano Calcutta 400, boca bearings for it and a Trevala rod to put it on.

My favorite reel is the Curado 300EJ. Compact reel holds 205 yards of 50# line though I use 30# braid on it. Mounted to a Grafighter 765XL rod it is all that I need and then some. I like the power handle with the 300EJ reel as it is easier for me handle with wet hands and gloves.
