Sorry to hijack, but I have a couple quick questions while you're talking about Deep Sixes:

1) How deep can you go with a Deep Six? Double Deep 6?

2) For fishing a given depth (say 35-40 feet deep), do you have more drag from a Deep Six (or Double DS), or from a 2-lb ball?

Thanks in advance! So far I have only trolled with 1-2 lb balls, which was plenty manageable. Just interested in learning about all my options.

Thanks,

-Alex

I've seen that 1.5 times the flasher rule, but that seems too short to me.

Always looks too short to me too but I've caught salmon on the short leader and only a couple on a longer one so I go with what's worked for me.

Hoochies aren't real ideal from the yak though, my preference would be bait, apex, spoon.

I use them most of the time with or without bait.  Results speak for themselves.  This year 7 out of 8 salmon so far came on a double glow hootchie with bait or no bait.  Last year 98% of my salmon (40+) came on the same hootchie with or without bait.

Aaron, it sounds like you're cutting too-big of a hole in the hoochie. I would suggest either piercing the tip w/a hook or cutting a smaller hole in the top (at a 45* angle btw). Also, are you sliding a red bead & glow bead inside the body of the hoochie, above the hook? That'll help prevent it from walking up the line too.

That's why I caught one Monday and 2 today on a hootchie bait combo cause hootchies don't work well on kayaks.

Oh also as for deep on the deep six,  I use the smaller double deep six and have got a fish 80 pulls because I saw fish at 80ft when I was out 5 miles at 156ft.  A couple of weeks ago I saw fish at 120 feet so I did 120 pulls and got one 15 minutes later.  Now go get out there and just DO IT!! :smt001

Lots of good advice here.  Thanks.  I am thinking poking a hole instead of cutting the tip of my hoochie will probably solve my problem.   Now to test my newfound knowledge-I just need the salmon to come a little closer to Monterey.
Take some, but save some for later.

Reading comprehension must not be one of your stronger points. Reread and tell me where I said they don't work.

Curious, what size are you guys using?
