I have only done it once, but I had a problem and I was wondering if anyone has had the same issue and could share their thoughts.

I was running a deepsix - to a 2-3 ft leader - to a flasher-to a 4' leader with a fixed two hook hoochie.

The problem-
The hoochie would "walk" up the leader towards the flasher.   I would troll around for a while and everything seemed fine, at times I would catch a rockfish and bring it up to see everything was OK.  Other times, when I would bring in my rig to check it - the hoochie had moved forward along the leader and had actually gotten wedged over the swivel on the trailing edge of the flasher.   What the ???  How?  Has anyone had this problem?

I was thinking maybe I had cut off to much of the tip of the hoochie and that maybe just a pin hole would be better.

Not that I'm an expert. I try to make the leader from deep six to flasher and flasher to bait the same length.

The leader from the flasher to hoochie should be about 1.5 times the length of the flasher in order to transfer motion to the hoochie.  4' is pretty long, it's probably not getting much action, never had one walk up the leader though.

Were you moving as the line was being let out and are you in constant motion?

Thanks. I will try that next time.

I've seen that 1.5 times the flasher rule, but that seems too short to me.  I go with two to three feet between the Herring Dodger and my bottom hook.

As for that walking hoochie...  I'm not sure what's going on - try straight bait!   :smt001

If you are still trying to control your hoochie then you probably haven't been married long.  :smt044

The hootchie moves up all the time.  That's normal, but it shouldn't be able to go over the swivel.

For the 11" hot spot flasher the leader should be 36-50" for the 8" mini hot spot the leader should be 26-36". Rotational flashers are recommended for hoochies.

Hoochies have no movement on their own so they depend on the flasher for movement. To give more transfer of movement, a heavy stiff leader can be used (40-60#). I use 40# Seaguar fluorocarbon which is stiffer than mono. The heavier line also prevents the hoochie from moving up the leader.

The distance from the deep 6 to the flasher depends on the size of the deep six and flasher. The general rule for kayak fishing is to use the shortest distance which allows the the flasher to rotate properly. 2-3' is the standard recommendation but I have run them as close as 18". Long leaders make it harder to land the fish from a kayak. so I usually run everything at the minimum.
