So I have the Hobie PA with the Lowrance ready transducer mount where I put installed the DSI unit. My assumption is that it should be fine there, right?

I think I will follow up by stating that the DSI is an almost MUST outside of hull.  I'm eagerly awaiting a DSI unit to test this theory of inside vs. outside hull transducer install.

I have no practical experience in the DSI category, but I have seen it said time and again that what you are saying is true.  It makes sense... if you are going to bother with having a sonar that will let you read structure like an open book, even the smallest amount of signal degradation would seem unacceptable.

I would be really surprised if it didn't work like a charm.

Correct.

The "standard" fishfinder (ie. non DSI) can do a wet bath, epoxy, etc. with almost no degredation to signal because of the frequency range.

Here are two images, both from the same Elite-4 DSI.

One is in the water, the other is ductsealed into my hull.

Hard to see the differences between the two. One is at 19' the other at 30', one split with the chart and the other is not. Either way I need to do something with mine, it does not look near that cool. Are you running at the 800mhz? In the 30' image is that a big bait ball under the boat?

my guess is the first image is the one with the tranducer in the water... way finer detail on the tree limbs and what not... and yes, that is a bait ball in the second photo.

I just got a PA with the lowrance ready spot and installed a elite 5 DSI and it works awesome! I plan on taking install pics eventually. What do you guys do with your wires when running them in the hull? How do you keep them from sitting on the bottom in case water gets inside your hull? I like to keep as dry as possible.

I don't worry about my FF wires. They are made for wet enviro anyway.

+1... wrangle them with a zip tie, but don't worry about the moisture

Damn al the details on that first pic is awesome. I might do a rudder install in the near future if this install don't satisfy me.

Those are nice quality images. Where do you have the transducer mounted? Do you find a drop off in quality over 50 feet? Also, how is the noise in shallower water, say 6-10 feet. I have the mark 4 dsi and have not been impressed. Have tried it in two positions and also directly in the water with the same results.

Nope, thats backwards ;)  There is a clue in the first pic, shows that it's on the Hobie.  The second was taken in the dark on the RTM going out of the SC harbor.  I know it's not a perfect comparison, different depths, split screen, etc.  But you gotta admit it looks pretty good for a in-hull install.  I'm sure there is better clarity if the DSI is used in the water, but for me it's a lot more about convienece.  As far as quality goes, it seems excellent in near shore, picking up a lot of fine details.  At around 80-100fow it starts to drop off, but at around 150fow it's basiclly only able to pickup the bottom, and bait balls midwater.
