I watched an episode on Comcast On Demand the other day where an individual got harassed by a shark in New Zealand longlining off of a kayak. The link is below. I thought it was an interesting account of what happened and the long term effects from the incident. The good news is that the shark didn't perform a full on attack, but seemed very interested and stuck around for a while.

Holy cow Raydog, that is quite a story!
I recall reading that a year or so ago on here. Chilling!

What happened to me was nothing compared to that. The fish was nowhere near that size, and it never did bump the kayak, only followed it.
Fortunately I don't think I'll need professional counseling nor prescription drugs either. Just my fishing homies to listen to my story over and over, and maybe the odd beer now and again....

Did anybody out there have a Shark Shield?

I think I did make a joke about "tying on my biggest swimbait", ha ha. That was after the fish had gone :smt044

Eric B paddled out with a shark shield soon after the encounter; none of us who were in close proximity to the shark had one.
With more kayaks on the water, and a couple of PB's that zipped by outside I felt the fish was probably off looking for some less busy water.

yeh, Eric B came out with one. you can ask him how much confidence he has in it  :smt002

I think the shark was a sweet gentle curious creature, sort of like a cat. with big teeth.

NICE FisHunter!!!  You may get some requests to duplicate  :smt002

I actually was encouraged reading this report for the simple fact that it did not attack. I am not naive enough to think it couldn't or won't happen, but based on the number of reports on here I have read without incident compared to the few reports dating back to Dan's incident in 07, I feel pretty comfortable being on the water with company and not dangling bleeding fish over the side. This is not to say I wouldn't do the occasional check over the shoulder or long gaze towards the depths looking for shadows. I applaud you guys again for your calm demeanor and hope the beers and recalling of the encounter calms the nerves Piscean.

Take it easy,
Ray

it was a strange day.

The excitement stayed with us, but soon enough we were all spread out and doing our normal routines like any other day on the water.

There were moments when I was bracing hard, absolutely sure I was going to feel The Bump any second.  But other times I was very relaxed, on the verge of drowzing off.  Mind games, I'm sure.

Sean you definitely have free beers for life status with me.

I probably would have fed it a scuba tank then emptied my 45 clip into it, or does that only work in the movies? :smt002

In reality I would probably  :smt078 those things creep me out!

Way to keep your cool :smt004

Maybe we should honor or award any NCKA member that has had a close encounter with "Whitey"
Decals for the yak, special recognition in the avatar/ personal area, shark shield, or whatever the members deem appropriate.

What do y'all think?
