...compared to 114 CPFV between Morro Bay and Crescent City....fishing approx 5X per week...with approx 20 anglers per trip...fishing for limits of rockfish.
Since I'm on a roll (making stuff up), I'll take a shot at this math equation:
114 boats X 25 anglers per boat X 8 rockfish per angler = 22,800 rockfish harvested every Saturday (btwn Morro Bay and Crescent City...there are 216 CPFVs south of Morro).
Again, I'm just approximating...
Me likey the way you thinking  :smt044 :smt044 :smt044 :smt044 :smt044

That doesn't count all the deep water fish, that aren't allowed, that are left bobbing on the surface in their wake  :smt011

The numbers can be cooked in an infinite number of ways.  Traditionally you make your numbers coincide with whatever your agenda is  :smt003

No agenda here except for a little understanding of how yakers impact the fishery close to ocean shores. I haven't processed the stats/links SinCoast shared since I'm at work still. I'll have to catch up later this evening. :smt001
I wouldn't go so far as to call a lingcod filthy but they're definitely dirty. But, a lingcod's got personality. Personality goes a long way.

OK Darius, because you said to correct you if you were wrong, 45x100=4,500, not 450

...damn math...!

No, I think Darius was right.  If I understood it correctly, he was saying, of the 100 fishing, only 45 of them will keep a limit.  With a limit being 10, 45 people * 10 fish in a limit = 450.

Or we could go 10+2=12; 12*45=540.

Guess I should have kept reading.  This was already covered.  My bad. :smt009

Yeah, I don't mean to sound like a CPFV-hater. No agenda here. I believe they serve a purpose and I've spent many hours on the rail of various party boats (that just sounds wrong).
I'm just trying to provide some resources for those who want to know the facts when comparing apples to oranges, in terms of harvest amounts.

I'm at work, so I can't do any figuring right now, but a couple of biases not accounted for in your assumptions:

There are many more yak fishers than those in NCKA

Mortality on C&R rockfish in over 60 FOW is high.

Due to the limited range of yaks (compared to PB) there are local areas that rockfish abundances have been affected by yak fishers.  Caspar Cove is one that comes to mind.  In recent years the number of yak fishers launching and fishing the cove has increased notably....and the fishing has started to fall off.

But you're right overall, yaks have way less impact than PBs (power boats and party boats).  However, the difference may be less than we'd like to believe.

:smt023 on all accounts.  It should also be noted that the boat does not take fish, the passengers do.

How many fisherman did each boat serve? If you're out two or three times a month only keeping a couple fish but C&R'ing a bunch of non-desirables, why are you better than the cpfv guy that fishes 2-3 times a year and keeps a limit?

PS I doubt every boat had 20-25 passengers on each trip and I' bet they're fshing about 3-4 days a week.

Hmm. I'm not seeing it that way and I'll tell you why. If each kayak guy goes out 3 times a month and keeps 2 quality fish each time the PB passenger is out 12 times a month (4x a week) and keep 10 RF each trip, that's already a big difference! That comparison is just on kayak guy per PB guy on a monthly basis. If you take into account how many more PB guys are on the water on any given day/month compared to kayak guys the difference is even more remarkable.

We are note saying we are better than certain individuals, the factor is not individual its general, meaning the impact of a boat compare to kayak, I've been to party boats different peeps almost every weekend the same amount RF is being caught! Does the 100 kayak are the same NCKA every Saturday I dont think so!

PS I doubt every boat had 20-25 passengers on each trip and I' bet they're fshing about 3-4 days a week.

You are right! Not on everyday its 20-25. But, they do 7 days a week, weekend trust me on Saturdays they can go up to 36 angler (queen of hearts) 25-30 on Salmon Queen/Captain Hook at Emeryville I know I've been to this boat not just once, average 2x a month! thats before I bought my kayak :smt002 :smt002

Theres one thing I notice, we definitely need to take care our way of culling fish in our favorite spot since we have very limited access, Agarcia making a good point 2-3 times a month on the same spot can definitely hurt our loving fisheries, even though in general PB catches more fish but they always have different spots to, not like us we are harvesting on the same spot over and over! in the end we are hurting our own honey hole if we keep keeping our limit!

Well gentlemen I learned somethin here! DaveW and agarcia's comments sunked in and I realized that I need to do my part with C&R. Now I have to figure out what my personal limit should be that I can sleep at night with. I should have thought about this stuff long time ago but better late than never.

PS - I didn't have an agenda against commercial PB. They are operating under the established rules set for them and I do, from time to time, hop on and enjoy the service they provide to sportsfishermen.

Maybe, maybe not it all depends on your perspective. Look at the bigger picture, the thirty people on that boat is your average Joe, alot of them don't fish regularly and they're out to enjoy the ocean and bring home a limit of cod.  Much like your kayak gets you on the water, the boat is just getting them on the water.    If you happen to be working the same reef as a party boat with 30 people on board, its not one boat taking 300 fish and one kayak taking 10 (I'llget to c&r in a second), its 31 people on the reef with the ability to take 310 fish...or in your own words.....the same amount of rockfish are being caught! There's thousands of fisherman in the bay area not everyone has the luxury of fishing from a kayak or small sportboat, by pointing the impact finger at cpfv's you're essentially pointing the finger at the thousands of anglers they serve.   Maybe your point is just that there is too many fisherman?

PS I doubt every boat had 20-25 passengers on each trip and I' bet they're fshing about 3-4 days a week.

I think you can trust me, not many are consistently fishing 7 days a week and the bay boats you mention are fishing potluck bass, butts and rockies....not just one species all day everyday.  Seasons, weather, poor fishing, operating costs, and the economy are variables limiting operation on a daily basis.

Captain Kayak, I'm not advocating for or against C&R or keeping a limit of fish. I do both based on the situation and never care much for people telling me what I should or shouldn't do.

Wow! I'm digging this discussion. Given the raw data SinCoast provided and the excellent expression of varying point of views. Now I have a great desire to find out RF lifecycle, their rate of reproduction. Pretty much whether or not we'll greatly deplete RF population with the way we fish for them.

Someone please share some knowledge. Thanks.

I'm not a big fan of party boats, but Art is right they do serve a purpose, allowing average folks to get out & do some fishing once in a while - a respectable service, IMO. The operators are also hard-working people and these are small businesses, which this country is built on. I don't know of any party boats in this area owned by big corps (feel free to correct that if not so). I give the owners & operators credit for hangin' in there despite the increasing difficulties running a biz in this state and country. Bottom line, Party boats (or recreational PBs) are not the enemy & I think we'd be doing ourselves a disservice by alienating them.

I do wish more of the captains/crews would make more of an effort to descend rockies with barotrauma - at least those fish would stand some chance of survival. And, um, I won't mention anything of the a-hole boat that likes to charge toward kayaks off the San Mateo coast - hopefully, it's just a lone prick & doesn't represent the rest of the fleet.  :smt011

Re Rockfish lifecycle, they are generally long-living and slow-reproducing, some more than others. Check out the books (also available on Amazon, etc) and the charts on this site. Detailed info about life span, repro maturity age, max size, etc:
